Kudos to you for taking the high road and contacting them. Not only will you appear to be the better person by them, but you will be

Advise them as well, bearing that I remember correctly so check with your vet, that it's species specific, henceforth if they have cats/birds etc they should be fine

I would tell them also. My little one Jazzy had mange when I adopted her. Previous owners dumped her at the shelter because she was "sick". Mange is very treatable but if I remember correctly my vet told me to be careful with my other dog especially if he was younger than 2 (but he wasn't). It did take Jazzy almost 6 months to be fully "cured" but a lot had to do with her.

Riveree, jazzy had the same problem with her fur but i didn't think the treatment was too bad. yes SHE didn't like it but it was for her own good and I just kept on telling her she was one day closer to being 100% better. I remember when the animal shelter first posted jazzy on petfinder I looked at her pictures and my heart broke because alot of her fur was gone. The shelter treated her, took new pictures when her fur grew back in and well the rest is history.

Here is what I know. All dogs carry mites that can cause mange. Mom dogs have mites and give to puppies during the nursing (feed and licking). Each dog may have different species of mites and population can vary. The bottom line is they all have mites. It is like most of us carry bacteria in our system. When the immune system became weak, the population of the mites expanded, causing the disease. The weak immune system can be the result of genetic problem. Or simply, the puppy is stressed out or abused. Or the combination of two. Usually adult dog has an immune system that can surpress the mites population.

Actually I got a hold of two of the adopters and they were very nice...but I come to find out that the puppies also (the two but I'm sure the third will have the same thing) had a bad case of fleas and one of them had a visual rash on her belly (probably from licking at her spay) that was infected and needed treatment. Now I have to say that I'm sure this foster meant well but I am so concerned now that she didn't care for the puppies as she should have...because let me tell you no puppies leave my house with anything visibly wrong with them unless I have already had them vet checked, and geez louise...FLEAS! I mean that is one of the easiest things to get rid of and control and we provide advantix for all the litters we foster out...so what did she just not use it? I'm really upset...so I called one of the senior rescue people and told her I think I've corrected the bad press with these adopters but OMG! this woman can not foster for us anymore...so she said well puppies do get mange...and she said we had one other batch that did as well...then she remembered...IT WAS THIS FOSTER AS WELL! So no more fostering for this lady. Now I have to call all the adopters of the last batch she fostered for follow up as well....can't tell you how thrilled I am.

Ok done ranting....

But the good news is these adopters were just glad they had the puppies in their care now and were happy we let them know.

How frustrating to hear! Hey Irishmom, at least this has come to your attention now and you have the common sense to see the pattern. Sorry to hear you have the extra work of following up with some other adopters, but it may be good to document nonetheless. YOu are a good rescue staff person!!! Great job!

The thing is puppies are a lot of work. We get them usually too young or still with the momma and you have them usually for at least 2 months because we spay them before adopting them out. They are a ton of work, cleaning up after, giving them baths (because you know they poo all over then walk in it), giving them meds and socializing them. When I was talking to the adopter that took the one with the rash she said she saw it but didn't want to leave the dog in that situation! Now I dropped them off and thought she was just really busy that day because her kitchen and dining room are gated off for the dogs and was a nasty mess...but the rest of the house was fine so I thought she just got in after a long day. But the difference is when you come to my house...the dog room and crates are always clean and the rest of my house is a clutterd mess because I spend all my time cleaning up after dogs! I should have realized that was a problem but this woman has fostered for us before and she really wanted the puppies, and the founder said let her...so my house would be free for the next batch.

Anyway this woman has one puppy and the momma dog left and is leaving for vacation tomorrow...so I'm going to go over and get the last two dogs and vet them on Saturday to make sure they are ok and just keep them here until they are adopted. I really can't handle anymore right now but I just feel weird letting them stay there. Live and learn.

Awwww! Glad to hear Jazzy's good story !

At the time my female had mange, my male dog was 3, my cat was way old (still is !), and my birds were each past 2 (also a milestone for birds, infection-wise). No one caught mange from her, including the 2 humans .

The treatment was this milky stuff we had to mix up in a gallon jug and drench her with. She acted as though it burned her (no signs of that though) and would be extremely would up afterwards (lots of running and rolling). She's a very high energy dog anyway, always has been, but this treatment really got her going. We had to do it quite a few times, but we got through it and in retrospect, it wasn't all that bad. With very young puppies, it should be easy.

Interesting treatment. I just had to give jazzy medicine for her to drink (in a seringe sp). That was tough because she didn't like the taste of it. I think one poster (lingling) mentioned something about a weak immune system, that's what Jazzy had and it's the reason why she was on her medicine for so long (just couldn't get rid of the mange) but that's all behind me/us now. Jazzy's 3 now and has grown into a very happy, healthy, ENERGETIC dog.
