The important difference is that sarcoptic mange itches. Demodectic mange doesn't!

The rescue I'm with took a momma dog and her 4 pups...three of the pups have been adopted out and one remains. She is 4 months old and recently was diagnosed with demodex mange. Everything I read says the mites come from the momma and the symptoms don't show up until this age.

The question: Do you think we should contact the other owners and have them take their pups to the vet to be sure they do not have it also or is it probably just the one pup that developed it? Also should momma be tested?

TIA!
Most dogs have demodectic mange mites living in perfect harmony on the dog, but sometimes the animal becomes stressed or is very young or very old and doesnt have the antibodies that keep them from multiplying to fast. The mite itself secretes a substance that can actually undermine the immune system, but thankfully there are multiple treatments for this. Revolution sales a topical treatment that you put between its shoulder blades that absorbs into the bloodstream and eventually makes its way into the oil glands in the skin and hair follicles (This is where demodex canis lives). When you are treating an outbreak and not just preventative measures you should double the freqency of use. You can read more about it from

Default Shelter pup w/mites

About 5 weeks ago we adopted a 9 month old Lab mix from a shelter about 1 hr. from where we live. I took her to the local vet 3 days later and she had a good check up. Then about 6-7 days ago I noticed a small hairless patch on her left chest and a thin hairless 'linr' on her left front leg. I noticed that she licked these areas frequently the last 3 days. I called the vet and had an appt. for today.

The vet did a thorough exam, scrapings, etc. and diagnosed Brandi with Demodex skin mites. He treated her and I will be taking her back in 14 days for the 2nd treatment and 14 days again after that.

He advised me to call the shelter tomorrow and advise them of Brandi's condition. He explained quite a bit to me about this condition and then I have now read many articles on the web. Now I have read all of the posts on this thread. Makes me feel somewhat better for Brandi. Y'all make it sound as if she will be cured of this and be the healthy pup that I thought that she was when we adopted her.

We have been quite lenient with her when it comes to sitting on our laps, on a love seat and even on the bedspread on one of our beds. So part of me was thinking, oh, what have we done? Mites everywhere and we will get them also. Now I sit here itching all over.

Thanks to all of you posting responses to the OP. It has been helpful to me also. Thank you.

Unhappy Advice needed Please!

Any advice for the treatment of mange? I took our no1 10 month old Lab mix to the vet yesterday and they treated her with a 'dip'. Today she is in constant misery. Licking the hairless areas, chewing on her paws, shaking her head, and itching all over evidently judging from her actions.

The vet just now said to give her 2 -25 mg. of Benadryl 2 x a day. I am to take her back in 2 weeks for another dip. How has anyone else had their dog treated for mange? I really would appreciate any assistance from anyone having had their pet go through this. Thank you.

Working in a vet hospital I have seen this several times and it is such a bummer! Hard to get rid of. ALL of the puppies are at risk!

Mites are very species specific so you probably don't have any!

Call your vet back and let them know. They have seen the puppy, they are the best ones to ask for advice.
