I am going to get a dog. Now I just have to find one. I have only had big dogs in my life but now I would like a small dog. I stopped at the humane society today but not one of the dogs were small.

I would like to adopt a dog. I also put an ad on CL.

Good for you!!! Dogs can be great friends and companions, just remember how much work and responsibility they are too.

Before you rush out to find the perfect dog.. maybe make a list for yourself of things that might be important for you and your circumstances.

For instance... are you outdoorsy, like to hike or bike?
Are you more indoors and quiet, like to read and hang out?
Do you like to fuss with things, maybe enjoy a longer hair dog to groom?
Are you a clean freak or more laid back about "stuff" that accumulates in your home?
Are you a bold, outgoing type or the shy and quiet type?

Some of those questions and answers might help you find the perfect dog for your lifestyle. Nothing worse then a quiet, like to hang out and read type of person getting themselves an active, gotta go for an hour run a day type of dog. Clean freaks, or people that can't stand a mess, usually have a difficult time with dogs who have a lot of face hair, or beards. You would be amazed what they can carry in those beards!!!

Take your time, think with your head as much as with your heart. Dogs live a very long life and are time consuming! Good luck with your search!!!

Also some rescue sites for a specific breed you are interested in is a good place to look. I think they may have a general rescue for small dog breeds too.

Small dogs are easier to find homes for than large dogs so there's always a disproportionate amount in the local shelters. People who rescue dogs often pull small dogs out for their foster/rescue groups because of that.

Like was recommended, go on Petfinder where you'll be able to see all the rescue groups in every area and their homeless dogs waiting for a family. There are also tons of small breed rescues.

I located both of my Shih Tzu's through petfinder. One is a special needs guy, I knew that when I took him home with me. He was $250, the other one was $500, included first shots and fixing.

Good Luck in your search!

This is so exciting for you! Instead of Craigslist, which I think brings out the scammers, please check out Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder We found both our dogs through Petfinder in the last eight months. You will not get scammed on Petfinder. It is all shelters and rescue groups.

Be careful on CL. There have been cases of dogs stolen and re-sold. Others, the animals were extremely ill and lied about. Make sure they give you all vet records immediately.

Good luck and so glad you are adopting!

Try Rescueme.org for a specific breed and states. They send you alerts when dogs are available. Be sure to make your choice not just on looks as each breed has certain personality traits and characteristics. Do some research first. Good luck.

Let me know how your c.l. Search goes.
It has been 2 days since we contacted 8 ads from people re homing their unwanted pets.
The only calls we got back were from a breeder who wanted 500.00. His ad was deceptive.
Another guy said they found a German Shepard pup an just wanted 100.00 to a good home.
We called, guy said when my wife gets home she will send pics....never heard from them or the other ads again.

Hope you fine "the one". Good luck. We are going through a rescue site.
