What do you guys think of break sticks?
Pit Bull Rescue Central
Just wondering because the two people I do know that own pitbulls don't have these and according to this rescue everyone should. I have never heard of that before.

Interesting info...
IMO, it's something to add to the hype. And I certainly have no plans on getting one.
I can honestly thank my trainer for the excellent work he has done for my APBT. The advice and wisdom I learned from him on how to properly train a dog in all circumstances I can confidently say that a break stick will not ever be needed for my dog.

You need those to open the mouth quickly. I think they are a great tool if ever needed. As I said earlier in my post maybe owners of other breeds should be able to do the same. Its just that other breeds often bite a human during a fight so I'd feel a little nervous using a breaking stick on a non Pit Bull. Its something to always have around. Some people use some crazy methods on dogs (like stun guns, kicking or beating the dog neither of the latter will get the dog to let go either) but this method is one that won't hurt the dog and will work effectively. I always have mine with me just in case. While my own dog might be well behaved unfortunately I can't trust how everyone's dog is socialized and never know when it might be needed. They are something a lot of people haven't heard of but they have been used for APBTs for over 100yrs, just not too many other breeds so most people never hear of them.
I'm sure they were used on Petey's Dad a time or 2. I'm not sure how many dogs played Petey besides Lucenay's Peter, I know in the most recent movie they used an American Bulldog.

I've never personally seen a situation that warranted it, but someone else might feel the need for one.
I like the idea that it won't break their teeth (as opposed to something metal).

the APBT was once the quintessential icon of American family life, that during the 40's and 50's the APBT was the number 1 family dog, APBTs were used in advertisements for Buster Brown Shoes and much more, APBTs were the only breed of dog to make the cover of Life magazine three times and the second Petey (Lucenay's Peter) from the Little Rascals was a UKC registered APBT, Lucenay's Peter. In 1936 he was cross registered with the AKC as a AMSTAFF.

I just didn't post a picture of Petey.
Cute pics! I don't know how many different dogs played Petey??
Here are the few pictures that I have of Petey..
Like I said, I don't know how many different dogs were actually used, but to me, it looks like each picture above of Petey is a different dog.

By accident
Sometimes by accident, we get and fall in love with these breeds. I went to the city pound over a year ago and fell in love with this puppy. Had to wait to see if she was recovered by her owner. When pre-adopting her, they said she was lab and hounddog. Then when I picked her up six days later, they apologized and said they believed she was lab and shepard.
After a couple of months, I would see her back hair stand straight up and she would become extremely aggressive with other animals and people. She was fine when walked but if dog owners did not leash their animals and allowed them to run up to her, all hell broke loose. Her facial features had changed and she seemed steel-like. To sum it up, I saw a pitbull magazine at the store and almost passed out when I realized that she had a lot of pit bill.
I gave her to someone who lives alone and without other animals (was a problem) and visit her often. She has mellowed out and seems to enjoy being owned by a male and being the only pet/companion to this man. She truly has become a beautiful, amazing animal. He is able to stay calm with her, especially when walking and she seems to be much calmer. I miss her but felt as a woman with kids and other animals, I just could not handle the aggression. The vet was even intimidated by her.

It seems like that could be one of the problems with adoption. I can see where the other poster was asking about this. Often times shelters don't know their breeds. I know some might list dogs as Pit mix (like that would be less dangerous?) or a mix of another breed even if they know its a Pit but that to me is wrong. Lying to a potential adopter in hopes the dog will get adopted.
Finding the right dog is about having as much info as possible. Breeds have certain breed traits. Different breeds fit into different lifestyles.
The dogs I spoke of earlier which I got from the rescue, one was a black brindle Pit Bull and they had her listed as a Boxer mix. They knew she was not.
Other times though it is done out of ignorance. There was a Boerboel in a shelter a breeder was working to rescue which was also called a Boxer mix. I saw a chow, which looked pure Chow called a Golden Retriever. Who knows maybe it was a Chow and Golden mix that just looked pure. At any rate the dog looked pure chow and why they didn't list it as Chow mix is beyond me.
It sounds like you made a wise decision in placing a dog with someone who can handle that dog. Although the human aggression would be a huge concern for me and something I would never tolerate. As with the animal aggression if you have other pets and don't have the time or know how to work with a dog like her it was best to re-home as you did. Many rescues don't adopt out animal aggressive dogs to homes with other pets for obvious reasons, some people think that is unfair but I think its wise.

Oh I have gotten some very interesting litters from shelters....these were beagle mix pups supposedly...
That grew into this:
Everything with floppy ears is a beagle mix in a shelter evidently...LOL

Hey I can't see the pics? One time we had some pit pups and people were like "Oh you have beagles" lol. Because they had their big floppy puppy ears.
