I think you've got your answer. Now let's start working on a name. If it's a boy Chester is my vote. Chester is a great name for a male retriever.

I have a 1400+/- SF house and have a 60 lb heeler mix, a 68 lb boxashepherdor, a 22 lb jrt x beagle, a 22 lb min pin mix and a 13 lb cat.... the cat has her own room as sanctuary from the dogs.....

they all have their favorite spaces in the house and yard while I am away.... when I am at home, they all stay as close to me as possible....

LOL! Chester is a great name, but I already have my heart set on "Gibbs".

So are you planning on another Lab? I have a beautiful yellow female named Isabella Grace. You can see her on my profile pic.

At one time I had four labs in a 1200 sq ft house. Our yard was small too, but it was big enough to toss a frisbee or a ball. They were perfectly happy.

I've been seriously considering it. After we lost our Ben, our lives just seem a little emptier. He was our baby. I just want to make sure another big dog would be comfortable in our little Hobbitt house. From the replies, it sounds like we have nothing to worry about.

Your Isabella Grace is beautiful!

We have five dogs in a 1650 sq/ft house with a good sized yard and everyone does just fine. A Lab mix 60 lbs. Three Bostons weighing 34, 27 and 27, a BIG French Bulldog weighing 40 lbs. On the flip side, we have a small cabin (500 sq/ft) in the mountains and spend almost every weekend during the summer up there and the dogs are equally happy there too.

I'm with Dawn...they're happy to be with you...wherever that may be.

I had 5 Scottish Deerhounds in a 1300 sq ft house. Dogs don't get much bigger than that.

The dogs did have a safely fenced acre to run in and burn off energy. Leash walking works just fine if there is no fenced yard.

There are differing energy levels in large breeds. Maybe for a small house a lower energy breed would be better if OP is worried about space requirements.

I've got Papillons and one 6 pound Papillon takes up more space than a 120 pound Scottish Deerhound. Energy level makes much more difference than the size of the dog does.
