vet gave steroids and OK'd using zyrtec with them, I guess I start off with 3 steroids per day and then the dose gets lower over time. She recommended this regimen as a short term solution while we figure out the cause, to which she recommended I start with changing to a hyopallergenic food. But we just switched foods recently so I'm going to keep him on that for a few weeks before I make the jump to expensive hypo foods.
Steroids work wonders on calming their skin down but they just can't stay on it. Something else you may want to consider asking you vet for is a product called Resicort. It's a cream that works really well calming their skin down. I have tried the all natural products you can find in Petco, Petsmart, etc., and it doesn't work. The dermatologist we used in SC and the one here in VA both said those are not effective on animals with allergies.
Does anyone have experience using this on dogs with allergies?
My 2 year old dog has developed severe environmental allergies (we think) and we are at our wit's end trying to figure out how to help him not be miserable and I was reading online that some people have had success using zyrtec. Benadryl is what the vet recommended but it just barely takes the edge off and makes him super sleepy.
i have a bulldog with bad skin problems and allergies as they are notorious for. i took my dog to a bulldog specialist and he recommended zyrtec or claritin, said its completely safe. i like it better than benadryl tooo as i dont like making my dog all sleepy and drowsy all the time
I give him baths like once ever other month or whenever he gets extra-stinky or dirty. I consider his allergies to be severe because he spends 95% of his waking time licking his paws and occasionally his bum. He licks his paws to the point where it is so raw he doesn't want to walk because it is painful, but usually I am good about preventing it before it gets bad enough. Seems just when he's getting better it flares up again, but its mostly a daily thing at this point. Also keeps me awake all night trying to get him to stop chewing/licking to the point where I force him to wear a conehead many nights/days.
How much do the weekly allergy shots cost and how well do they work?
Have you considered bathing your dog more? When my dog gets really itchy, I start bathing her every other week along with washing her bedding. I also give my dog a spoonful of organic coconut oil 5-7 days a week. Nothing the vet gave to my dog worked for her long term. I tried almost all of the human allergy medicines. The only one that helped her somewhat was Zyrtec, but it was expensive. Depending on size, dogs have to take a much higher dose of Zyrtec than your average adult human. I'm happy that my dog's allergies are under control without having to give her medication. I also feed my dog all natural, grain-free dog food and avoid chicken and beef flavors. When I gave her a beef bone a couple of months ago, I noticed that bumps were developing on her belly.
I agree with what ZSP said about feeding and bathing.
There is a great new drug, Apoquel, that stopped my Westie from licking his paws beautifully. Because of marketing this drug the company has back ordered until the middle of April. Benadryl was no help. Tried Zyrtec 5mg. and now he has mouth warts. GADS! Stopped the Zyrtec and will tough it out until the middle of May.
How many of the 10 mg. Zyrtec pills can I give per day to an 80-85 lb. Lab? Her allergies are really bothering her, and Benedryl is worthless to her as it is to myself. Zyertec does not help me, but my hope is that it might help her. I feel it is worth a try. Thanks.
Benedryl helps neither myself or my dog. I take two before bed just to help me sleep better, but it does nothing for my allergies. Zyrtec has only worked once for me whence I was exposed to a particular tree pollen. My dog's vet told me I could give her two Zyrtec a day, but it does not appear to be helping her. The only thing that really helps either of us is prednisone, but as others have pointed out, no one can remain on it for very long. It is so frustrating.
Hi... I know this is an old post but I'm hoping for a reply. Can you tell me what the dosage is for a 50/60 pound bulldog for zytec?
Thank you
I give my 58 pound Bull Terrier 25mg twice a day.
