My dog just had puppies with my other dog. However, the female dog ate one of the puppies . Is this normal?

The dog that had puppies ate one? Was it right after the birth?
Animals do eat a newborn if it is stillborn or something else that the animal instincivly knows is wrong with it.

If other animals in the 'group' eat another's young, it is usually a male killing all offspring from the previous dominate male. Never heard of an alpha female doing this, but maybe.

Owl is correct. If Mommy knows a puppy is defective, she sometimes eats it because she knows it is ill and won't survive anyway.

So glad you decided to become educated about dog breeding BEFORE you bred your dogs.

So, mommy ate the puppy because it was defective?

It's connected to the foul smell from underneath the bridge

That was my first thought but I knew I couldn't express myself without getting really nasty.

Mother dogs eat the afterbirth, and although not common, they sometimes will consume a defective puppy.

Please, please, please get your pets neutered. The world does not need more puppies!

It is normal enough. The dogs will eat any stillborn pups or defective pups. They will also eat their pups if they feel threatened in any way.

So maybe the pup was defective or maybe the mom-dog wasn't in a situation where she felt secure.

OP, I strongly suggest that you get your dogs spayed and neutered. You are not, at this point in your life, qualified to be a dog breeder.

I never had a mom eat the Whole pup BUT Stephanie when she had her 1st litter went beyond the cord ate the puppies back legs & tail before I realized what was going on. After that I learned NOT to leave mom alone esp during their 1st litter. Back then the pup had to be put to sleep cause there was no wheelchairs for dogs. I also seen very defective dogs live... So does make you wonder Why.

OP what bred is the mom/pups? No Don't think breed has anything to do with it just wondering.
