I'm getting really worried about my 4 month old poodle/wheaten pooch. He has been hacking, honking and coughing for over a month now, he either swallows what he produces or throws up a little bit - it's white and medium thick.
I've taken him to the vet countless times and and he's been on three rounds of anti-biotics and several nebulizer treatments.. Doc claims chest is clear, and that he's just coughing up remnants of phlegm from an old kennel cough. I've also purchased a humidifier. Any advice?
This is my first pup, so I'm pretty nervous and not sure if this vet is a quack. any advice is appreciated. thanks.
He may not be exactly a quack, but kennel cough does not normally linger on so long, especially after so much treatment. I'd definitely get a second opinion. Most kennel cough clears up in a week or two with no antibiotics, but there can be nasty strains going around at times. Please let us know how he's doing. And a picture of your new pup would be nice!
has the vet checked his heart?
heart problems frequently start with a persistent cough
hes not old enough for heartowm issues but a congenital heart defect would be a possibility both poodles and wheatns are prone to valve/heart disorders, and since people purposely breeding mixed breeds don't typically health test their breeding dogs the heart would be my absolute first concern.
what about his trachea and soft pallet? while they typically wont cause phlem/mucous cough up, both can also cause a persistent cough.
toy and mini poodles are prone to trecha issues
ive never known phlem/mucos issues after kennel cough...even kennel cough that turns to pneumonia doesn't typically take months ot clear up, plus you wouldn't treat kennel cough with antibiotics or a nebulizer.
Thank you everyone for your replies. His chest x-rays showed his heart was good. I took him to a second vet and she put him on a completely different antibiotic and there has been no hacking at all!!!
Good to hear! Thanks for the update. So often we never hear what happened.
