I found out our vet is trying to liaise with Cornell in USA and also in UK specialists in Liverpool and Bristol :/ it just takes time to get hold of these professor types! I suppose they're in high demand! xxx

Most likely he is not the only one. This is a disease that is inbred in that breeder's entire stud or b**ch lineage. It's just a matter of when the disease rears its ugly head.

The breeder knows about this, guaranteed. You can hang in there all you want, but this is a very sick pup and you will lose him sooner or later. Take him back for HIS sake, get your vet bills paid, and stop being loyal to this deceitful "breeder". Your vet should have told you that. You could wake up one day and he will be dead. Sorry to be so blunt; but you do not want to deal with that. Honestly, I would get a good lawyer/barrister ! They should not be allowed to continue with this line. You'll see how fast they shape up and take care of your bills.

The money doesn't bother us and the breeder did say (when I bought pup) that the stud had been imported from Hungary. So she would have had no idea if he carried this or not. As for ***** -she's bred from her before and no issues. Her dogs are all crufts champions and she's a very well known breeder of supreme boxer dogs in the UK. She's not some Mickey Mouse breeder here.. It's not her fault. The vet said today (after having a response from Cornell) that this condition is possibly genetic (not enough evidence to support that and that is from the head of worldwide research into this condition) so i can't go in with the big guns even if I wanted to. According to vets -this condition is triggered by E.Coli build up -a concentrated dose (I.e chicken poo..) that the body then responds by not only trying to attack that but also healthy tissue in gut, making it inflamed ect..
The professor did say that from the extensive research done that Bayril does cure to an extent. The dogs from research that have had a course of this for 2months have been symptom free for 30months so far..
So there's hope that Arnie could be the same.
Like you said, it could get worse with other medication and on that medication outlook is very poor -dog would just waste away to nothing. But this new med Bayril is apparently working.. I think it's being trailed in humans with chrohns disease too.
So far, he's only been on it a few days and (maybe over optimistically) his poo is starting to look better. By that I mean it's still diarrhoea but instead of being blood and water, it's now brown like poo. His weight is also going back up. He was 13kg two days ago now 13.3kg... So slow progress, but it's something.
I see your concern but I think we will keep him and keep going. As vet said keep him away from places (I.e chicken pen) where there is a likely chance of very concentrated e.coli/campyrabacta build up. Before Arnie gets home we will keep chickens only in their pen (not gonna let them free range) which is big 5x5metres so I hope they will be happy in there... She also said this could be something he may grow out of or is less severe when he's older but right now his immune system is compromised because he's a puppy and has been in ALOT of antibiotics.. You name it... He's had it! Lol! Bless him! So we understand its going to mean dedication and hard work.. But he's a fighter (and I have a mum who's been a fighter all her life and beaten all the odds against her, she was born with a heart condition drs deemed she wouldn't love to see 20 ...she's 54, had a child ect) and I will never give up something that wants to survive! If one day we woke up and he was dead -so be it, but my conscience will be clear, as I know in my heart of hearts I did everything I could of... My chicken was meant to die -but I saved her (severely egg bound) vet said 50/50 if she would survive -but with love and dedication I fixed her.. xxx

Ha! What an odd chain of events... Our vet is a referral vet for the whole of the south west of England (as many, if not all our the vets in the practice are experts in certain fields). The vet that scanned Arnie's tummy is a gastrointestinal expert and taught the lady in America (who's now a worldwide leading expert in hystiocytic ulcerative colitis), that's how they knew about the drug Bayril which has only been used for a couple of years now (off license though...) and how to treat him ect.. The lady who's a gastrointestinal expert said she had only ever seen one other case like this (this is in the whole south west if England in 20yrs!!) so Arnie is quite a specimen. Also, it's fate. Fate that we took Arnie (as many may have put him to sleep) and fate that we happened to have this vet on our doorstep! xxx

When he fills out and improves, maybe you can post a picture of him. Hoping for the best for the little fellow.

Thank you quilterchick I certainly will! Odds are good that he will make a full recovery 70% with a 30% relapse (down to not killing off all e.coli in 1st instance) but it looks good! As for side affects, the lady in America (who has been researching this medicine in use if dogs) has not personally seen arthritis in a dog but it has been "possibility" by other vets that have used it in the handful that they have tested on.

Thanks OP for posting a positive update. It is heartening to hear that things are improving. I do think that somehow animals are directed to the right people sometimes - I just wish it happened more often! Good luck to both of you!
