I was walking my dog last night when all of the sudden a toad hops in front of us, and my dog's impulse drove him to snarl and grab the toad with his mouth. I immediately pull it out from his mouth and went back home to wash his mouth. After awhile, I noticed that his mouth started to create a foamy thing that caused me to panic. Will this compromise my dog's health? Thanks
Some toads are poisonous (maybe all? I don't know!). If you got it out of his mouth right away it's probably okay, but do keep an eye on your dog--it'll be morning soon in FL, and then a quick trip to the vet might be a good idea. Ar least give your vet a call. Best of luck. (Just in case your dog should get weird symptoms during the night, it's time for the emergency animal hospital if you have one nearby.)
I don't know how long it has been by now, but for anyone else's future reference: if your dog doesn't actually ingest the toad, start rinsing it's mouth out ASAP. Keep rinsing the mouth and wiping off the gums (which will be swollen and inflamed). I did that for about 30 minutes and my 50 pound german shorthaired pointer was fine. She only showed symptoms of foaming at the mouth and swollen gums. Other serious sumptuous like shaking and temporary paralysis should probably be seen by a vet.
I already visited a vet and he found nothing weird symptoms in my dog. I will just continue monitoring his health. Thanks for your suggestions and ideas shared here.
Toads native to the U.S. will not kill a dog. The glands behind the eyes shaped like a pinto bean will secrete a mild poison. The mild poison will cause foaming of the mouth and possibly nausea.
Since you are in Florida however there could be a much more serious problem. Florida is home to many invasive species. If you have Cane Toads they can kill a dog.
Google images of Cane Toads. As I said American toads will not kill your dog and from my experience your dog will never bite another one.
