Just to clarify, the restrictions have nothing to do with the cargo status of the pet and nothing to do with the route being in the south. The rules are that the airline can not fly the pet when the projected temperature at ANY GROUND location is above 85 degrees. You can ship your pet from Miami to Phoenix with a stop over in Dallas during the summers so long as the temperature at any schedule stop/location does not reach the cut off. People fly their pets into places like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Palm Springs everyday but they do it on flights departing and arriving during the overnight so as to not run afoul of the temperature restrictions. If you are shipping your pet from Barrows Alaska to Portland Main in the dead of winter but with a stop over in Tucson and the daily temperature is expected to be 86 degrees, that pet will not be allowed to fly. So, it has to do with the anticipated temperature at that airport while that flight is on the ground.

Could you check with Rescues In New Mexico and see if any of them have any dogs being flown in with the pilots and paws ( Or some name like that) that use their own private planes to fly dogs often for rescues as maybe the dog could tag along on such a flight?

If they shipped the dog, it was going to wind up at a major airport near, but not in, Clovis. They would still have to rent a car to go get the dog.

Have them tally up the cost of two airline tickets, the cost for a shipping crate, the cost to ship, then cost of renting a car to go get the dog at an airport. They're going to find that the cost of renting a small compact car for 4 days, plus a few nights at an inepensive motel, is not going to be much different.

I can't see turning my dog over to casual people I met on Craigslist. That's a good way to lose a dog.
^^^^^ This. The thought of sending that poor dog with some stranger makes my blood run cold. In the past, I've flown a dog in the summer on Continental Airlines. They have a temperature controlled area so it doesn't matter how hot the outside temperature is.

Continental (United) still have to get the animal out of the hold to the van to take them wherever. The problem lies if the van is not there when they are off-loaded and they are sitting on that baking hot tarmac. Trust me, it has happened and it will again. When we shipped our dog back from Europe, everything that could go wrong did, including that very thing. He was so stressed we thought we were heading straight to a Vet but he calmed down quite quickly once he was in the car. He will never fly again! Don't ship your dog in the heat. It is not worth taking the chance.

I absolutely agree about not sending a dog with a stranger though. There is no way I would do that.
