I just tried trimming my dog (llhasa/Shih tzu mix) for the very first time. I have a nice Wahl clipper set, and using the longest guide, I didn't do too badly. I actually did it in "20 minute sessions" - sitting on the couch in his favorite spot and didn't need a table or noose setup, but my dog is very laid back. It was easy to tell when he was getting fed up with the procedure and needed a break. I think the important thing is that I did a very thorough grooming prior to using the clippers -- there were no mats or knots for the clippers to get stuck in and freak us both out. I used grooming scissors (the type with the blunted ends) to trim around his eyes, muzzle, foot pads and sensitive anatomy -- he was very good with that pretty much lying still, and as long as I patted him every few minutes, he was fine. I didn't trim very much off, maybe 1/2 inch and he looks fine. I certainly don't want to do it all the time but if it saves me 1 trip out of 4 to the groomers, that is fine. Gentleness and patience will get the job done
