We adopted Hobbs, our lab/pit mix 4 years ago. He's around 7 yrs. old. Because we live in the country on 120 acres, he's been off leash. I want to walk him on leash now but when leaving the house he refuses. If I walk him off leash and put it on for the walk *back* to the house, he's okay with that. How do I get him to walk both ways? Continually feed him treats? Tried praise when he walks a few steps but then he won't budge.

Gentle leader? This lady need to exert her dominance in a nice way. You want to make a puller out of a dog? A dog is not a horse, does not need a halter. This is a pitbull/lab.

Do you actually know what a gentle leader is, and how it works?

Bob.

Im going to give you ceasars tip and it does work cause I have used it . force him by dragging him , he should not hurt himself he will walk to keep himself from getting hurt . I used to have a dog that would not walk at all and when she saw other dogs walking she wanted to keep up with them and do you have another dog that he could walk with ? Make that dog lead dog and see if he wont follow he should .

Bob.
+1. The Gentle Leader is a fantastic tool. I'm a tiny 5'2" woman and I can walk both my adult Great Danes simultaneously using Gentle Leaders. I have never had luck using anything else to stop pulling with my Great Danes, and believe me 150+ lb dogs are incredibly strong. I've even had shoulder surgery on both my shoulders. You can buy them online or at Petsmart for about $15.

A dog that pulls is trying to be the dominant dog. (or refuses to heel) yes I know what that dog halter is. THis is what works, like a charm. You have to assume leadership. The Perfect Dog

That is exactly the purpose of the gentle leader.
It tells the dog to heel, because that is what the owner demands of the dog.
It puts the owner back in control of the dog that wants to do things his/her way.
Bob.

Oh, lord with this dominance b.s.

A dog that pulls is merely excited and undisciplined.
