Was wondering if all vets do this? I would assume not. My Ginger has the start of them...who removes them and how much does it cost? Any info. would be sincerely appreciated....Thanx! :

My MinPin has a cataract in her right eye. Our vet recommended removal by a Vet Opthamologist. I contacted the Opthamologist and if I recall correctly it was in the neighborhood of $1000.
We decided not to have her cataract removed at this time. She is nearly 10 years old and has seizures. We would like her to be able to see up close again, but we are concerned about her other issues. Last time she was under anesthesia, it took a long time for her to come around.
The MinPin my wife & I were caring for had cataracts in both eyes such that he was essentially blind. We were referred to the university school of vet medicine. The cost for removal of lenses and replacement with artificial was pretty much $1,000 each eye.
We think he was about nine years old when we started. It took some time to get him in a state of health that the doctors were willing to do the surgery (he had a severe case of heartworms, and needed dental work).
The actual surgery went well. It was done using ultrasonics to break up the lens and remove via vacuum, and insert the new lenses with minimal opening of the eyes. We had him back home the same evening.
He can see again and we're glad we had it done.
Look up canine opthomalogist. - I have a dauchshund that developed cataracts quickly after being diagnosed with diabetis. The sooner you deal with it the better the outcome. I wish I had this advice when my little guy had his eyes done. Cataracts get harder as time passes and that makes surgery more invasive. Usually, after that procedure, your little one will be crazy- happy. I can see !!!

Here are 2 help sites, some of the members have had the surgery done, also go to the main pages and you will find the link to the blinddogs forum. Alot of diabetic dogs go blind and alot of the owners have had the surgery done.
My quote for both eyes at Ohio State was $3500 for both eyes, and their are several appts afterward and you will use eyedrops so many times a day at the beginning.
We are interested in helping our Boston Terrier who has cataracts. The University of Missouri small animal clinic just quoted me 1700 for one eye. He has cataracts in both. Have you heard of eye drops or medications that will help with cataracts? Thanks!
Our vet prescribed a med that will relieve any pain when it gets worse. It is a med for humans and very pricey. It is our ferret with the cataracts, she said the best we could do is have them removed - no lens replacement.
my dog had cataract surgery in florida. it was expensive (about 2500 for both eyes, with cherry eye repair as well) but it went well and she changed from being quiet and sluggish to being very active and so happy. i didn't realize how much her vision loss was depressing her. in my case it was well worth the money, but there is quite a bit of after maintenance with daily eye drops and the head cone for a while.
