Orphaned lab mix 3-4 weeks old...
Just wondering if there was something else I needed to be doing for our new puppy. He is currently eating Elbilac 2nd Step (since he can lap it from a bowl) mixed with puppy chow.

What did the vet tell you to do? Poor little guy...that's too young to be away from his mommy . I bet he is so adorable though. Good luck!!!

Another thing you should do, that his mom would be doing for him is to simulate her licking him. This stimulates the puppy to, well, do his business and gives his innards a nudge to do what they're supposed to do. You could do it with a warm, slightly damp washcloth and just stroke him gently after he finishes eating. Do it all over just like his mum would have done.

He's doing very well with going potty. We take him outside everytime he wakes up from a nap and after eating. We have an appt. with the vet next week to schedule various shots.

What shots? He is way to young to have any shots. The youngest a pup should be is eight weeks before any type of shots are given.

6 to 7 weeks of age: Give first combination vaccine. (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus)
9 weeks of age: Give second combination vaccine.
12 weeks of age: Give the third combination injection and possibly a LYME Vaccine inoculation. Generally a LYME vaccine is then repeated two weeks later, then once a year.
16 weeks of age: Give the last combination vaccine.
12 to 16 weeks of age: Rabies vaccine is given. (Local and State laws apply regarding Rabies vaccine since this can be a human disease, too. Your veterinarian will tell you the proper time intervals for booster vaccines for Rabies.)
Special considerations: Many veterinarians believe some breeds such as Rottweilers and Dobermans should have at least two Parvo vaccines with the last one being given at 20 weeks of age.
Have you started a wormer yet? Ask Vet about this.

Since he is very young, his immune system is not strong and he doesn't have mom's milk to provide the defense. He needs to be separated from other dogs (as far away as possible). Even with the vet visit, I will schedule it early in the morning or sometime to avoid other dogs (or ask vet to come to your home for the shots). Every time, when you handle him, your hands should be clean. After he has his shots, he can be exposed to other dogs. Once he developed a healthy immune system, he will be a healthy dog or you will have other health problems down the road. My GSG got a bad bug when she visited her vet first time. Luckily, the vet is a good one and doesn't charge us for the treatment. But it made me very nervous.

Usually you don't just go to the vet to tell them "I'm going to come in -- to get his shots"...Or at least I've never done it or heard of any one else doing it. I just didn't want htem to be give to early.
dreamhunter65 - 8 weeks should be the first round of shots.
