I stumbled across Purina Vital (at Target), which is a refrigerated grain-free cat food that is like a cross between kibble and wet. It's soft, meaty pellets.
I originally bought it for my cat, but she didn't like it. My roommate and I were looking at the food and we thought it would be great for clicker training. It's also cheaper than regular training treats and doesn't need to be cut up like hot dogs or cheese.
Because it needs to be refrigerated we will be keeping the food in the freezer and defrosting in advance of training sessions.
Any drawbacks you guys can think of? Is there anything about this that might not be good for the dogs?
Generally cat food has a higher protein content than dog food so it's not good to feed it to dogs on a regular basis. I'm guessing it would be OK for clicker training (so you can finish up and not waste the bag) as long as you don't give your dog too much at once. I don't know that I'd do it on a going-forward basis once that bag is gone. You might check with your vet.
My trainer uses Vital Essentials Turkey Cat Food on occasions. At most the dog gets 15 little pieces in any one session, which is not enough to be concerned about.
I think there's much healthier choices out there than cat food. I'd donate the food and find good small bite size dog treats and use those.
We use Newman's Own brand for training. They aren't expensive and he loves them and only gets them while we're training.
