I simply do not understand the mentality of people like this. I hope they throw the book at them and bury them under the jail.

I think the article was wrong about some of the dogs going to shelters. This was Cavalier King Charles Rescue that organized and pulled this off. They would not then place the dogs in shelters. It's my understanding (from friends in that breed that work with rescue) that all dogs are going into foster care until they are deemed ready for their forever homes. This really was an undertaking. Word went out that they were running low on money and would not be able to acquire more dogs. More donations poured in at the last moment and made it possible to get all of the dogs.
If you read the comments at the end, people are saying that this money just helps that puppy mill produce more pups. Well, no. This puppy mill was going out of business. What this group did was ensure that these dogs were no longer used for breeding purposes and had a chance at a real life. I hate the puppy mill benefiting monetarily but I would rather see these dogs have the opportunity to have a normal life.

Apparently they were not charged with any illegal activity or abuse. The dogs were 'bought' at auction, which I guess is one way to rescue them. However wouldn't this simply contribute to the continuation of this practice?

Weird.

That was my first thought. They just enriched the people who did this to those dogs by $300,000. That sounds like pretty good motive to keep doing the same thing, not stopping. That money could have been used far better by supporting shelters.
