We have a female chihuahua who is about 13 years old. We got her when her original family decided to get rid of her and keep one of her puppies. Though fully spoiled, we're cautious about her food. For more than 10 years we've fed her mainly chihuahua breed specific dry food. Once or twice a month we give her half a bag of moist dog food. We measure her dry food 1/8 cup twice a day. When she finishes her bowl, we give her teeth cleaning treats. She got bored with the same treat daily. A few years later we switched to a rotation of treats. We first give her one unhealthy mini Begging Strips. Then comes the teeth cleaning treat. Once we give her the teeth cleaning treat, we rotate the bag to the back of the line. We use Minties, Dream Bone, Dentasticks, and Drummies. Her last Vet dental exam came back with great results. Get said her teeth look great even if she were a young dog. We told her what we do and the only thing she said she'd change is get rid of the Begging Strips but since we only give her no more than 2 a day it shouldn't be a problem. Her weight is also where the get recommends. She's still able to jump on the couch.
This is a shot of my dogs teeth at about 11 or 12 years old. He has had two teeth cleanings, as he was already being sedated for something else, once he had a tooth pulled and I arranged a cleaning, the other time he had cactus in his paw. But he never ate much canned food, kibble and people food. I never brushed his teeth, just fed him raw cow bones, to keep his teeth clean.
