I would guess maybe due to the hip dysplasia? I do remember how popular they were when I was growing up in the 70's. We always had GSD's.

Maybe they are all here in Santa Barbara as I can think of 8 that come to the dog park we go to. Some do not come that often but that is where we met them. And yes these are all purebreds.

I dont know where the Shepperd are.....now German Shepherds, I see those still. They are beautiful dogs and can be quite loving.

ETA: Heres a way to remember the spelling Shep Herd. Sheep Herd. They herd animals.

The GSDs bred in Germany are so much better and many of our police departments and military get only those. Here they have been bred to look absolutely deformed and it is truly sad. So many problems with spine and hip pain.

OK teacher-German SHEPHERD- feel better? in any case, I rather see those dogs, than pits. They don't seem to be as popular, DOBERMANS also seem to be missing a lot as well. As for the hips, there are a lot of other dogs with spine issues etc.
I have met some disabled soldiers with a much smaller breed of shepherd- but not quite as majestic.

I think All the GSD's are here in GA. We have 5 in our small neighborhood. AND NO, they are not the "deformed" looking ones which includes ours. We used to have 2 Dobies as well.
We don't see too many of those here though.
