My dog seems "spooked" and refuses to walk with me. Hobbs, our lab-mix, has walked with me, off leash, ever since we adopted him. We live in the country with livestock, coyotes, wolves, wild cats. Only a couple times before, part way through a walk has he bolted and run for the house. Yesterday he did this at the beginning of the walk, looking behind him--something had to be out there. Today, he refused to leave the front porch (except to potty). Should I give him a couple more days, assuming the threat is real, and if he continues to refuse to walk, leash him? He loves his couch but he needs exercise (and so do I!).
Get a game camera. Your dog is probably trying to tell you something. Like maybe you are being stalked by a mountain lion. In my experience it is never wise to force an animal to go someplace that it is refusing to go to out of fear. Except for maybe the vets office. ;0

I trust my dog's senses which is why I listen to him--I just hope he's not developing a false anxiety. If a wild critter is around it is most likely a coyote as one did show up last week 100 feet from the house. A mountain lion would concern me. Hobbs has no fear of the vet's office--maybe because he gets to see other dogs there?

The coyote can kill your dog.
Be careful......we hunt coyotes with dogs and it takes a pack.
When we lived in NM my dogs were use to hearing the coyotes, when their calls would change and they were on a hunt the dogs would immediately come inside. I'm sure Hobbs is familiar with the coyote noises but if he's spooked there is something else out there that he thinks is a threat. Trust his instincts, it could easily be a mountain lion.
