I'm seeing various recommendations for how far it should be inserted ... from just the tip, to up to 3 inches ... with little to no mention of the size of the dog involved, and no instructions on how to figure it out.

I'd really like to see it on a Veterinarian's website, with reasons for why the instructions are what they are.

(I've never done it before, so please bear with me! I want to use it ASAP, but the RIGHT way!)

It's pretty easy to take a dogs temp if you have a cooperative dog or someone to help hold him/her.

The reasoning for "how much" ...1" to 3" depends on the size of the dog. I have Bostons, a Frenchie and a Lab. For the smaller dogs, I insert the thermometer just 1" For the Lab, about 3" You don't want to perforate the bowel. Just keep the thermometer parallel to the ground and you should be just fine. It's pretty easy.

Here's a pretty good link complete with pictures.

Good info. Also, normal temp for a dog is 102.1, so don't be alarmed. Once you get the hang of it, it will be a piece of cake
