She is a mature dog but in good health. Found her wandering the neighborhood when she was about 9 months old, so I had had her for a long time. Once in awhile I can get a whimper out of her, but NEVER a bark! In the past she wasn't my only dog, but she never joined in with them either. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Afraid I've never experienced this with a dog, but I did with a cat. He came to me when he was only six weeks old, and I had him for 14 years...and in his entire life I only ever heard him meow once, when we were at our family's camp. He was following me through the woods to a secluded beach area, and at some point Snooch had wandered off the path and away from me. When I realized he was gone I began calling him over and over, and finally, after 10 long, agonizing minutes, I heard him call out...a small, almost inaudible mew....and he found his way back to me by following my voice. That was the only time I ever heard him vocalize.

I suppose it's possible that your dog's previous owner could have had the dog's vocal chords cut (a horrific thing to do to an animal), but I suspect it's more likely that your dog simply is one who chooses not to bark. It reminds me of a wonderful old James Herriot story, "Only One Woof"...

Basenji's tend not to make much noise, and since I was owned by them for many years, I rarely heard a dog bark!

My one female, Sally, was exceptionally quiet. She would growl at Buddy (my male) to keep him in line, and would whine a bit, but really never made much noise. Except once. We were staying at my brothers and he had a large fenced area across the street from his house. We put the dogs in there one day so they didn't have to stay in a hotel room. We kept hearing this howling...long slow and really sad sounding. I figured it was Buddy, but my husband snuck up to check on them and said it was Sally! I was shocked. She never did it again, as far as I know. She was such a good dog.

Could be the people before you trained her Not to Bark! Debarking Does Not mean they Don't bark....they do but sounds like they have a sore throat.

Some dogs just don't bark. I have a Boston who doesn't bark either. The other dogs go nuts when somebody knocks but she just greets them or stays in her spot. Nothing to worry about

I had a minature poodle who did not bark until he was 2 years old. His first bark scared him! He rarely barked his entire life, but did occasionally bark.

My lab is 15 months, and I've never heard her bark (or howl or whine or growl). Our other dog is a very vocal husky that barks, howls, whines, and growls (when playing), but not one single peep from the lab.

I used to have a dog that never barked unless HIGHLY aggravated. So, maybe once a year? Some dogs just don't feel the need to bark.

Don't complain. You are lucky that the dog is not noisy.

She hasn't been de-barked. Debarked dogs bark a lot, but their noise is fairly low volume.
