I'm still trying to picture a labrador 'lunging' out of a partially opened car window. Doubt they could even get out of a space that small.
I actually talked to members of my local police department, asking them if there was any protocol they followed concerning dogs running loose, dogs barking in houses, etc.
I told them I have three cocker spaniels and they will bark if someone comes onto the property, but they are not mean, biting dogs. I also told them where I live.
Since I'm getting a little up there in age, I worried about maybe having a heart attack or something and having to call EMS; the police usually accompany them.
Having my dogs shot would be worse than having a heart attack!
Why on earth would anyone shoot a dog safely enclosed in a vehicle? This guy needs to be removed from the force. His actions were completely out of line.
My very friendly and well-adjusted dog loses his mind any time someone comes near our house or my car. I can't imagine if someone pre-emptively shot him even if he represented no danger whatsoever.
No wonder they settled. They knew they'd lose at trial. Like everyone else, I'm having a hard time picturing a dog secured in a vehicle, with a partially-open window posing a threat to someone on the street.

I've had to call for ambulance for myself twice in recent years. Both times I was instructed to put the dog in a room where they would be safe and no police ever accompanied them. EMS are not armed.
" "The potential for injury to citizens, including a potential suspect in the vehicle, does not appear to have been factored in to the decision prior to using deadly force," officials concluded.
Kelly, who has 17 years of law enforcement experience, in October had his pay reduced by $3.15 to $31.02 per hour. Police Chief Lee White has previously said that he is prohibited from talking about employee discipline."'
He is still a cop? If someone violates department policy he should be immediately removed from the force and prohibited from ever holding a law enforcement job again. He lost roughly 6550 in pay which will take over 12 years to equal the loss to taxpayers. He should have been kicked off the police force and his personal property attached to cover the cost to tax payers.
It's very refreashing to see an owner receive reasonable compensation in one of these wrongful death cases.
