Hi everyone. My 9 yr old lab had a small lump removed from her front left leg. It only required 2 stitches. They didn't wrap it & sent us home without an e-collar. They said she didn't appear to be going at it, so no need for a collar. Well against my better judgement I didn't put one on her & sure enough she just opened the incision this morning. So I put a cone on her, took her back to vet, & she's restitched just fine - still only two stitches. Her cone will stay on until the stitches come out.
The vet's office said to make an appointment for suture removal in 10 to 14 days. It didn't occur to me to ask at checkout, but I think I'd rather have several opinions here anyway. Would it be better to wait the entire 14 days just to be sure the wound is healed? Or is there possibility of an unknown (to me) complication by waiting? To me, that is quite a difference - ten to fourteen days.
She had a larger tumor taken off her back right leg that had complications healing. That was in January & resulted in a full leg amputation (long sad story). So this is why I'm so neurotic about the situation.
Thank you in advance, I hope some of you will give me your thoughts.
Really it will depend on how well it's healing as to whether they can come out at 10 days. I generally wait 13 or 14 days before having them removed. I'd rather give it the full time to heal than take it out too early (or be told it's not healed enough and make another trip back to the vet). I don't think there's any downside to waiting the full 14 days.
If you're concerned take her in at 10 days and see what they think. If you think there is an infection take her in as soon as you suspect it. I've taken mine in a couple of times to have them checked before the stitches were due to come out.
