I live along the river, in California. The algae blooms have been a problem here for over 10 years now. Every summer, several dogs, usually tourists', die from the algae.
Do Not- let your dogs drink or play in water where algae is present. Only areas with swiftly moving water is safe. I personally do not take my dogs to the river during the summer.
It's not just rivers, lakes and ponds are worse.
The algae is also toxic to humans, but not nearly as bad.
