English bulldogs info
I decided to do some research on the english bulldog breed and thought of starting a new thread to see what I come up with. My boyfriend really wants one but I was hesitant. I always thought they were sloppery-full of health problems- type of toy dog.
But, I have found they are super soft and really good with kids and cats. But, my biggest concern is the health investment with them. I need to know more about their intelligence and personality. are they good to train? Why are they so expensive?
Why do you like the breed? What characteristics appeal or don't appeal?
Thanks!!!

I have a friend that has one. He loves it, but it does have gas problems. It farts constantly. Of course that may have something to do with its diet. He's been known to feed it cheese and bean burritos.
What surprised me was just how fast it is. The dog can't hold a speed for very long, but is very quick over short distances.

Really? I never heard of that. That's awesome! I think gas in any dog can be an issue with their diet, but I will definitely remember that issues...LOL

I am a huge fan of the Bulldog (and all molossers) and have owned a couple, I can say that of all dogs Ive seen, the bulldog is my favorite.
"are they good to train?" - Bulldogs can be stubborn at times, but with proper care and diligent training from the owner, Bulldogs (at least the ones I had) can be very well trained and behaved.
Why are they so expensive? - This is due to most of them are bred via invitro and born via c-section. The puppies heads are usually too big for the mom to give birth easily. Prices have also gone up due to their popularity. I paid $2000 for one of my back in the early 1990s direct from a reputable breeder. Prices nowadays range from $2000 - $5000. Do not purchase from a Pet Store.
Why do you like the breed? - After owning a bulldog, all other dogs just dont seem to look right anymore. They are perfect chick magnets. They have same qualities as other dogs but really, I just like the way they look.
You really need to do your homework on the breeders you are considering buying from. All of my bulldogs came from SmasherCal (Smashers) in Southern California and I highly recommend them. Caroline Whiteside is/was one of the owners/breeders there but they may have moved to another state. I knew they were great breeders because they interviewed me for what seemed like a couple of hours before even showing me a puppy to make sure I would be a responsible owner. I loved it.
I was lucky that my bulldogs had no health problems at all. They did have to have the surgery to remove some excess wrinkles around the eyes but other than that, they both survived for quite a long time - 11 years and 12 years. I fed them only Nutro Max and had a great general practice Vet and a bulldog specialist. They are the perfect condo dog as they do not need a whole lot of room to run around.
I say go for it. Get one and post his/her picture here.

Wow, thanks so much for posting that great information! I can agree with you on once you fall for a bully, all the other dogs just don't seem to have the same great appearences. They seem almost boring, average...LOL
Gosh, those numbers are high! I wonder if the rescues might be a little cheaper! LOL

I agree with all the poster said.
Because of their popularity many have ended up in rescue and if you could rescue one that would be great My current bullie is a rescue.
If you want DM me and I will provide the link for a bull dog forum...all of your questions would be answered as well as rescue in your area and tons of bullie pics

Thanks, I just looked at some sites for rescues and their stories. Unfortunetely I already have animals in my home and most of them have to be the only animal in the house, for good reason. I would need one that is good with cats and dogs. Thanks for your info. I'll keep that in mind.

Its always great to rescue any dog, but be aware that most Bulldogs you get from a rescue will probably have some major health problems which could cost you thousands in vet bills. People wont really abandon a dog they paid over a thousand dollars for unless they are looking at some very hefty vet bills.

Ive been thinking about getting another bulldog as a playmate for my 120lb Bordeaux. Bordeauxs are my second favorite dogs after the English Bulldog. Look at this cute puppy.
