Default Male doggy private parts question

Since you guys were soooo helpful with my last question, I thought I'd shoot another one your way. I'm a first time dog mama, so I've got a lot of questions, but I just moved to a new town, so I don't have anyone to ask. As I stated on a previous post, I just adopted a 1.5 year old border collie/lab mix. His name is Porter and he's a perfect match.

Now to the penis question. I grew up with female dogs so I know nothing about that area. The other day when I came home for lunch I noticed a bulbous mass at the base of my dogs shaft. I am assuming that the furry part is the shaft and the pink part is the penis. Again...all female dogs...I don't know. It looked like he had testicles, which he doesn't. I was about to rush him to the vet, when it went away. The penis wasn't sticking out, he just gets this large mass at the base. I've heard that it's because he's excited or he has to pee. Which is it? Or is it something else. It causes him no pain, from what I can tell, and it literally goes away once he settles down. It only happens in the morning when he wakes me up, and when I come home.

Thanks so much for your time. I really want to be a good mom to this rescue pup, I don't want to over worry, but I don't want to over look things. Thanks again.

lrw

He's excited. And, totally, 100% fine.

No problem, at all. I understand about "wanting to be the best mom" to an animal.

I just know because I *have* been around male dogs all my life. It's just one of those things with them. You know...males....of whatever species.

I have a male cat who is fixed who gets embarrased if his penis sticks out where you can see it. Its kind of funny actually. He does the same thing when he passes gas.

What does he do to show you he's embarrassed? I can only imagine!

He hustles and looks at himself and then does what you can imagine to make it go away.

One time he passed gas (LOUDLY) and he had this wide eyed look on his face, he sniffed his bum and sniffed the ground, got up and turned around, sniffing the whole time, like he thought maybe he had an accident.

One time my dog was sound asleep and I heard him pass gas rather loudly. He lifted his head, sniffed the air, and went back to sleep. He has no shame!
