I have a 3 yo male dachshund who has had very, very few accidents in the house since he was just a young pup. Two nights ago, we discovered that we must have squirrels in our attic as there is this scratching noise in the attic and our neighbor said she has had a problem with flying squirrels. The night that we could hear the scratching, our dog was running around looking up at the ceiling and sniffing at the vents. The next morning I found two puddles on the carpet in my bedroom. Is he marking? I have never had to deal with this before. How do I stop it before it gets worse. He is now stuck in the kitchen, laundry area of the house and has lost his bedroom privileges. I'm sure he doesn't understand what is going on, but I don't want my carpet or rugs ruined. Help...

No - his breeder shows him. Is that the problem? Would it just show up now? Is there anything I can do (short of neuter him which his breeder/"co-owner" won't go for).

I don't know, it could be one time incedent where dog feels invaded by "flying squirrell" and trying to mark his territory. I'm just guessing, i really don't know what else would it be if, plus you said he has never done it before. Very interesting.

Don't forget Dachshunds are a hunting breed...and are still used for that purpose today. So it's really an instinct thing that he wants to get at those squirles and run them to ground.

Check with your breeder about what you can do about it.

Well said RW, the breed is relentless and even good pet quality ones will act in ways similar to this.

Hmmmmm..... We called the pest control people today and the estimate to get rid of the attic squirrels and keep them out for good was $900! Maybe we should just put the dog in the attic for a few hours! LOL!

I cannot think of a humane way to get rid of squirrels unless you were going to eat them!!

Try and Owl figure....they hate owls, but you will still need to close up all those holes they are getting in...around here we call 'em tree rats. They can be very destructive to homes and if they die they can crawl into spaces and it can get nasty.

I have a cat that's an in door out door kinda gal and she keeps all small and sometimes not so small rodents away from my house and barn

Default No more accidents, but still "squirrely"

So, no more puddles or marking, but my little guy is still acting strange. He keeps looking up at the ceiling and jumping up against the walls. He clearly knows that there are invaders in the house (flying squirrels in the attic). This morning I found him in my closet - he had jumped up onto the laundry hamper and then onto a closet shelf. He couldn't get back down so when I opened the closet door, he looked like a decorative object just sitting there on the shelf!

The pest people come in a couple of days. The promise to "humanely" remove any squirrely they come across and install gutter barriers to prevent anymore entry. I hope the dog finds this satisfactory!
