What is going on with my two male dogs that they want to eat the potting soil in my containers? (One is a 5 year old Weimaraner, and the other is a 16 year old Jack Russell.) They have pulled the pansies out of the pots outdoors, and eat the dirt. They will eat the dirt from around large houseplants, too. Nothing we have tried seems to work -- my husband even urinated in the outdoors plant to see if it would keep them from eating the dirt.

We feed them a very good quality, high protein food we buy at the Health Foods store here, so I can't imagine there is anything 'lacking in their diets.

Any clues?

oooh, that one stumps me! I would assume it's something in the dirt that appeals to them like nutrition from fish that helps plants grow?

Dogs don't usually eat poop. Put their poop or your husband's poop in the pot. LOL!

I have an image of your husband urinating into the pot.

I hadn't even thought of that. His urinating in the pot didn't much deter them -- he thought maybe his scent as 'alpha dog' in the pack would maybe be a deterrent. Thanks, titaniummd. Oh, and I'll have to tell him you enjoyed the 'visual.'

I remember seeing something on Animal Planet about how some animals (and some people apparently) will eat dirt and/or clay b/c it contains certain minerals that's lacking in their diet. not sure if this is the reason why your dogs are eating dirt. it could just be a typical case of pica

You need to get them to stop - potting soil usually has additives.

Maybe a gravel mulch in the top of the pots would make them stop (or some smooth river rocks)? Otherwise, I'd move the pots to where they can't get to them.

Try spray it with something bitter, maybe a lime spray. My mam used to put pepper around the base of her pot when we had a dog over at the house to keep him away and it seemed to work.

Put some thing around the pots to stop them...potting soil has dangerous [to pets] chemical added!!

Believe it or not it's not that uncommon. Sounds like your dogs need a few vitamins and minerals added to their diet.

Don't put rocks onto of the soil since the dogs can ingest them and then you have a whole another problem.

Good luck.

When I first got my dog...she LOVED to eat potting soil! Eventually I got onto her enough and she stopped...lol...I am sorry yours are eating dirt too.
