Hi everyone,

I need some help. I dont have a much knowledge when it comes to pet and I have searched online but I cant seem to fine definative information.

So, I have bitten by a neighbor dog. 9 years old **** zhu, female if that matters. Its a house dog and owner showed me latest vaccine paper with was dated 8/3/2016.

I was wondering if I need to see the doctor in this case. I got small bit on right hand and no infections as I see. Its been 9 days and wound is almost healed.

My question is,

1. Is there a chance that this dog carries rabies?

2. Should I get PEP?

3. What I gather is 10 days observation rule. Is that even something reliable? I read an article that if dog got a rabies and rare case they survive, if so, dog has rabies.

I am just very confused. Please help. Enlighten me.

BTW, I dont know how to examine dog's condition but dog is alive at the moment.

Thank you.

It is very rare that dogs have rabies, they would have to have been in contact with a rabid animal like a raccoon or bat, pretty unlikely for a house dog. You also said that the owner just recently had vaccines done, so once again very unlikely.

Being bitten by a dog hurts but rabies isn't usually an issue. If you choose to see a Dr. they will need to report the bite and investigate. It is a choice you need to make.

A few people in this country die of rabies every year. They almost invariably are bitten by a bat or possibly some other wild animal. A guy who was bitten in Haiti by a dog died in Florida a few years ago. But beyond that.... someone contracting rabies from a dog in the U.S. is basically unheard of in the 21st century - that's strictly third world stuff these days. And a 9-year-old dog would have been vaccinated multiple times before the August 2016 date.

I would say you have nothing to worry about.

But I have a crazy brain, so I would find all sorts of convoluted ways to convince myself the dog had rabies. Because anxiety. So I understand your nervousness.
