I didn't know this until I saw Ricky Gervais' post about it on Facebook. What does it mean to me? As a dog lover, I love the fact that dogs (and other animals) are slowly being recognized as sentient beings, and that their welfare is important. While there are still atrocities that happen on a daily basis with regard to animal cruelty and suffering, in recent years it seems that more and more people are standing up to fight it, and more and more people are willing to do all they can to stop it.

So for National Dog Day, I tip my hat to the many, many [often nameless] humans who give their all - and then some - to help so many unwanted/stray/abused dogs find a better life. You are angels to these little souls, each and every one of you.

I think of how our ancestors first met the dog's ancestors at the start of domestication.... the exciting encounter where man and canine looked at each other in the eye, man lowered his weapon and the canine stops running away and baring its fangs... that moment, a bond that takes us this far, when we were still hunters...

They found footprints in an ancient cave in France of a young child walking beside a canine companion....

What a wonderful relationship we have with our dogs.

It's a day to raise awareness about evils like puppy mills (and the pet stores that sell the puppies), responsible pet ownership and enormous number of stray and abused dogs that need help.

I sang "Happy Dog Day To YOU" to my dog this morning. He was not impressed.
