He was almost attacked by a pitbull in this neighborhood but that person moved. The dog ran out of their house and started chasing him while he was taking out the trash he yelled at the dog and took a fighting stance so it backed off. He said if It was me I would have been mauled. The owner didn't even apologize. He just said oh I bet you were scared weren't you. After being told to leash the dog he said oh I'm moving anyway. So no I'm not exaggerating these people are a holes. After that he decided firearms are the way to go. I honestly don't know if moving would help. Austin is very dog friendly. I've heard of people doing this all around the city. That's why he is reluctant to move because he does like the location but it seems like people in this entire city behave that way.

edit: he also escorts me to and from my car whenever he is around
Sorry but that don't count since he doesn't care to move to a Safe place ...

I'm afraid the only way to solve this particular one is to move. Your BF's attitude is to shoot first and ask later; that's ok for him I guess. If your BF is not concerned about your fears then I wonder why.
He just says you will feel safer if you carry a gun so he just expects me to feel the same. I notice the apartment owners are awful with their dogs. We won't be able to purchase a home for a few years because we are only living in this state temporarily. I think its also a culture shock. In Maryland not everyone owns a dog and if anyone is seen doing something like that they would be in major trouble. I have never in my life seen people walk their dogs without a leash. I just think it is so irresponsible. I would say 90% of the people where we live are responsible dog owners.

The people of Austin are notorious for not using leashes. If we move there is no guarantee our new neighbors will be any better that is his logic. I agree I would live to leave this city but I have no choice.

I love how most of you are defending the irresponsible dog owners. You are such good people.

I once moved in part because of unleashed dogs and both property management's and Animal Control's unwillingness to take action. I carried a stun gun when I lived at that place. My dog has a permanent scar on her face from an attack by...you guessed it...a Chiwawa (sp).

I now live where 2 female (unsprayed) pitbulls reside in a fenced yard behind me. They have gotten loose on occasion. They killed one of their puppies right in front of me one day about 4 months ago, and just yesterday, killed another small dog that I don't know where they got. I couldn't get close enough to identify the dead dog to see if it lived there or was dragged into their yard after a horrendous commotion that was what got my attention in the first place.

When I saw this happening yesterday, I called Animal Control and their voice message said they were off for the holiday. I called 911. They transferred me to Public Services, I think it's called, who said Animal Control was there but their phone wasn't working. Public Services couldn't have cared less about my report.

I guess next week I'll go to the Animal Control place and file a written report, and then to the police department to do the same. Several people, including me, walk dogs on leashes in my community. It's just a matter of time before something horrific happens to a leashed dog and/or its owner.

Let it be known loud and clear that Oklahoma City Animal Control is totally and completely worthless. I've called them probably 5 or 6 times about these dogs either being loose or killing other dogs, and so far, the dogs still live there, pretty much ignored by their owners and by Animal Control.

When you live in a city where Animal Control refuses to take action, there is no safe place.

Hold on princess. Posters here gave you advice based on their past experiences. Your BF won't go, you come here griping about it, and we're the problem?

Hold on, you.

The OP shouldn't have to move. She should be able to depend on Animal Control doing their job. If you don't understand upholding laws, yes, you're the problem.

Oh don't get me wrong; I do agree with obeying leash laws. What I was referring to was the OP calling michigas a name in a previous post that I see has been removed now. There was some very good advice about taking pictures, etc. I don't condone loose dogs, but neither do I condone name calling when someone is trying to help.
