fleas, no. Heartworm,,,,,we have mild winters. So, my rule is, if there were warm 'mosquito' days since her last one, then she gets one 1.5 months later. So, last year, all year round. The year before We got enough freezing temps for long enough I skipped one or two. Heartworm is no joke, to me better safe than sorry.
Here in Dallas, the vet says we need to keep them on it all year, because it doesn't get cold enough to kill off the insects, like it does in other places.
I loved living in the desert. No fleas, no ticks because it was too dry. And therefore no meds and no heartworm!!
Our little guy was treated for heartworm before we got him. No way would I ever let him be exposed to it again. I did skip his last 90 day flea and tick pill, because I don't think he needs it in the winter. I will give it to him in March, and through the summer.
Yes during the spring and summer months not in the winter because their bodies need a break and we have our yard sprayed for bugs , fleas , ticks etc ...
Ryder was heartworm positive when I adopted him. The treatment is expensive and intensive and I don't want to risk another HW+ result.
And I had a mild flea infestation back in September or so and was able to jump on it quickly and prevent it from turning into a MAJOR infestation. But I don't want to risk it. So he gets his Nexgard every month.
Heartworm meds, year round....we live in southern Colorado.
