The shelter thought our latest rescue was around 10, turns out she was 14. Two years later at 16 she is still going strong, she's a big lumpy dog but she bonded to us as we did to her. I know she won't be around for much longer but she has sold me on rescuing the old ones and spoiling them for as long as I can.
I cant rep you again so soon, Dogmama, but I love your post.
All of my pets until the current one were throwaways of my mom's. She's constantly getting pets and getting tired of them after a year. We take them and 6 months later, she has a new one. It's disgusting. The current dog came from a rescue. The owner pulled him from nycacc 15 minutes before he was supposed to be put down for kennel cough. He was found tied to a pole in the middle of a blizzard in Queens. I often wonder who did it.
My boys are from a rescue group that specializes in herding dogs. My friends here in Denver basically picked them out for me - I had very little to do with it. One friend was fostering for the rescue, and she basically let me know that this Catahoula pup was perfect for me. He's a pain in the ass, but she was totally right.
The other one, my roommate ran into an acquaintance at a dog sports event and thought her kelpie foster (for the same rescue) was absolutely delightful. She set up a meet and greet between me and my Catahoula and the kelpie, and that was basically all she wrote. He is indeed a total delight.
I'll probably never get another dog from a breeder, but I will confess to thinking I will get my next cat from a reputable breeder. I want a Siamese kitten - my first cat was a Siamese that was amazingly smart, but a little screwed up from his time as a stray. I would like to have a kitten that would grow up knowing my dogs and that I could clicker train from the earliest opportunity. I expect to get any future cats after that from a rescue (all my other cats have been rescues), but just once, I'd like to try out having a Siamese kitten.
There is a Siamese rescue in Denver, Rocky Mountain Siamese Rescue. We were owned by Siamese for a while and I miss them but current pup is not a good match.
One from the city shelter in Las Cruces, NM, one from the Dumb Friends League in Denver and the third my grand-daughter adopted from a friend whose dog had a litter of puppies.
All three of ours came from local shelters/rescue groups. We really lucked out because all of them got along extremely well with the cats we already had as well. At one time my late H and I had 9 cats and the 3 dogs - it was quite a full household!
We only had pure bred dogs from breeders until the one we have now.
We got a rescue dachshund from a foster family, and he is a super good dog. Although I doubt if he is truly a purebread, he's pretty close. I like to say that he's 90% schnitzel, and 10% burrito.
I'd like to honestly say that I got a rescue dog because I'm such a caring person, but the real reason is we can no longer afford to buy an expensive dog.
I found my current dog after she had been hit by a car and left to die. That was 13 years ago.
