Something you can wipe down, like leather. Hair sticks in fabric terribly.

old ones, any fabric. :roll eyes:

I have leather and it works good, but I have scratch marks in one arm where Taffy decided the leather wasn't quite to her standard of softness, so there is a discolored patch on a two year old couch. If you are ok with marks and scuffs, leather holds up well, fur (and mud, and the dogs favorite godknowswhatelse) wipes off, but the dog will scuff it up in some form or fashion.

Most furniture fabric is pretty heavy duty, but I would stay with tight weaves and smooth textures. One less temptation for the dog to "help" you with redecorating, and a little less of a fur magnet.

Get a pet cover as no matter what you put on your sofa the dog will slober all over it rip it and shed hair on it, at least a pet cover is cheap and you can throw it away and get a new one every so often.

PS those are Canadian prices,i'd imagine the American product to be a bit cheaper.

I have a full-length sofa in a green microfiber type of fabric. I found that a twin-sized quilt covers the seat and back cushions perfectly. When it gets particularly hairy (or just needs a general re-fresh), I just toss it in the wash. I use white, because 1) it looks best in my home 2) it hides the white Siberian Husky hair and 3) I can bleach it if/when I need to.

How does faux leather hold up?

My current fabric is like a tweed jacket but I keep a comforter on it and also a blanket over that. One dog likes to hang out on it, the other one will only go on it when I'm on it and when I'm putting his harness on. The arms aren't always covered since it shifts and they are pretty good about not damaging furniture.

I have a new sofa in a tight weave chenille that hides the fur really well. I always make sure I buy sofas that have a washable fabric, a couple times a year the covers go into the washing machine and I wipe down the sides and back with a damp towel. Lots of custom upholstery lines have sunbrella fabrics that are really nice and are really hard to destroy.

Our sofa was pleather, a leather/plastic blend and it did not last at all. The pleather covering is over a fabric base and it doesn't stand up to abrasions at all. We are replacing it with full leather now.
