Our 15 year old Dauchsand Princess was going up the stairs by herself bc my sister was too lazy to carry her down. She slipped on the carperted stairs and sprained her front left paw bad. We took her to the vet and they gave her some pills. They said there is also a patch, forget the name, which would relieve more pain but it can have side effects and may even make the dog wimper even more from hallucinations. Does anyone know of this patch? Is it mostly for broken bones and more serious injuries? The dog is finally settling down now after my mom and her couldn't sleep last night. The vet said we can increase giving the pill from 3 times a day to 5-6 if we dont go the patch route.

Thanks.

Be careful if it's a Fentanyl patch. When my large dog had a procedure, he came home with one of those patches and it sent him into convulsions.

I'd stick with the pain pills. Rimadyl or Tramadol are the pills most often given to dogs for injuries or after surgery.

Pain/discomfort can be a mixed blessing for dogs because it keeps them from trying to use the afflicted limb, giving it time to heal fully.
