My female ozshep-husk is about 1.7 years old, was spayed at 3 months. She has been with me since May, and is my first female dog. I'm a dude so I have only occasional access to female anatomy, and therefore am not an expert.

Every once in a while, while she is licking herself, a powerful funky smell wafts up. Whoooooo! I do not think its anal glands because I've had male dogs with anal gland issues. It ain't fishy, its just phew! Funky. Do female anal glands smell different than males?

Once she stops licking, and she never licks for very long, the smell dissipates and I may not notice it again for weeks or months. I have only noticed it a maybe 5-6 times in the nearly 8 months I've had her. She doesn't show any symptoms of urinary infection, except she has always been a frequent pee-er compared to my male dogs, which were championship urine-holders. But she holds it fine when I'm gone for 5-6 hours, and has not had any accidents in months. Her pee smells like pee. She shows no signs of any health issues at all, just this very occasional and brief funky smell. She has occasionally scooted, but again not very often and not in association with the smelly events, and I haven't seen her do that in a couple months. I've examined her and don't see any redness or irritation or signs of discharge near either orifice.

Whadya think, female experts?

Most of my adopted dogs were spayed females. I've never smelled what you describe. Sounds like a vet visit is in order. Maybe talk to the vet first, then schedule an appointment when the odor occurs. A swab/culture could spare your dog a lot of misery.

Dogs are typically very stoic. She may not appear to be in misery, but there could still be something wrong.

Vet's the ticket on this one.

BTW, your description - "only occasional access" is pretty humorous. Thanks for the laugh! I've been there!

You sure it's not a dog fart? Depending on what my dogs have got into, their fart fumes are enough to turn a person off dogs altogether.

Definitely not dog fart, lol. I think she may have a UTI despite not showing many of the usual symptoms. I guess that can happen sometimes. But we'll get it checked out to make sure.

I agree with the others; it isn't normal. I've had several female dogs and have never smelled anything other than occasional gas.

Do dogs get vaginal yeast infections like female humans do?

If so, it could be something like that.
