DNA Testing..got the results.
I'm happy to report that we did the DNA testing discussed earlier in the forum. We did the full test (blood draw rather than the do it yourself swab) and got the preliminary results back today. Lucy is Lab, German Short Hair,
Pointer, and Tibetian Terrier. We can see the first three, but the last one was a surprise. We suspected terrier...but we were thinking more like Boston terrier...a Tibetian looks more like a ****zu (sp?). But we're happy we did it..we know what type of mix she is and we know that there are no issues with med's and a herding breed.
The full test is about $150-$180 depending on your area. The do-it-yourself swab is about $90. The full test was done via the Wisdom Panel company which can be found on-line. They also have a listing of the vets in your area that are already doing the tests. Our vet wasn't on the list but hooked up with them so we could do it thru him.

Neat, interesting combo. Do you have a photo of her? How long did it take? Just curious, are all breeds DNA'd now (b/c I thought not long ago only some were so only partial results were available but I c/b wrong). Thx

Other than curiosity...what is the reason to get DNA testing on a mutt?

I would love to have that done on my supposed Yorkshire terrier. She is 15 pounds and has yorkie coloring but curly hair that gets a little more kinky when wet, floppy years too. I suspect poodle since the breeder had a poodle on site. You just never know what some breeders will do. I don't know how she could of papered her that way though.

DNA...interesting stuff we can do these days. I guess something like that would hold up in court if you were promised a certain breed and it turned out not to be? Great for medical purposes too.
I've often wondered how AKC papers can be trusted as true because no one FROM the AKC org ever sets eyes on the dogs themselves. It's all a matter of trust I suppose. If I had purchased the sheltie I have now for the soul purpose of using her as a showdog, I would have been out of luck...she's too tall for the standard. Had no idea when we picked her out; she was the runt. She has papers longer than any I have ever seen...but you just can't predict how a dog will turn out. She's a keeper tho!!

My yorkie's hair does the same thing. He gets wet and it curls up but I keep his hair short. Their ears will fold down if you don't cut the hair on the tip of their ears when they are young. Mine only weights 8 lbs though..
I'd like to see pic too..

Hopefully the dog will have more of the lab personality rather than the Tibetan Terrier. I have a Tibetan and they are a handful!

AKC does require DNA IF the Dame/Sire breed often...but for the most part they only track papers. Still must trust the breeder to be honest. You can check the AKC rules on their web site.

I was just reading about the DNA testing today (courtesy of DogAge). I believe they said that they have 38 breeds that would show up in testing. That's only about 100 less than are recognized by the AKC. Big waste of money IMO.

I think to prove the parents are the right parents you test the mom/dad & pup. but does not tell you anything else like breed...AKC was just staring this in 1998 I had stopped breeding in 1997 so did not bother to check into it....
