Katie, no one put you down, we're trying to tell you that Service Dogs for Alzheimers patients are specially trained dogs. They don't bark to get attention for one. They will wake my husband and get him up if I stir or wake up in the middle of night and wander. There are certain things the dog will do that is done that is only trained in a controlled setting which takes 5 months of intense training. I see you didn't bother to read the link I sent you. The dog wouldn't even let me go so far as leave the home, let alone get to the door. these dogs are very very trained. You'd not be able to just train the dog because unless it is trained specifically by this certain agency then it cannot be registered as an Alzheimers Service Dog. Service Dog maybe, but not a Alzheimers Service Dog. There is very strict guidlines for this and this isn't way back like you said when it was for the blind and hearing impaired, this is now 2008. The criteria for Alzheimers service dog is very very rigid and strict.
No one is insulting you, you wouldn't listen to me or anyone else on what the guidlelines are for what I need for my disease becasue you train dogs and yet I need a certain kind of dog that only a certain agency can give me. Now once I get a service dog, then I can get training to help, but the initial training comes from 24 hour training. I don't pick my own dog. Doesn't work that way.

Well my uncle owned 5 acres . His brother owned another 100 acres & my granddad had 3 acres ALL connected. I did not want to tell him he could not walk the land & visit. I trained the dog because at the time 25-30 yrs ago NOBODY heard of such a thing. The dog was trained where the bounderies of the property was. Once he was reliable to stay within them. Then I work with my uncle on the rest.
Anyway Any Master Trainer could help you Finish the dog & certify it a Service Dog.
How long have you been on the wait list? How much longer do you have to wait? What stage of the disease are you?

I guess you didn't read the link I sent you. The dog cannot be certified as a Alzheimers Service Dog is it isn't trained a certain way and under certain guidlines and criteria.
Let's just not discuss this. Not worth it.

Seems I said this..."Regardless of the ultimate advanced training a dog may receive, the basic selection process is the same. We select most of our dogs from animal shelters, usually 100% All American Mutts, however, occasionally some are pedigreed. We normally do not select a dog until a client has been accepted into our program. We must know what our clients' needs are before we find the dog."
Seams like You said they were a spec Breed of dog!
They dont Socilize the dog or train you & the dog & caretaker together. You must go to an obedience classes when you bring the dog home at your expence...thats crazy.
"Although your dog will be basic obedience trained by Okada, we strongly suggest you enroll in a local dog obedience class. It is a fun activity for you and your dog to do together. It gives you a chance to practice your dog handling skills, to meet other 'dog' people, and it gives your dog an opportunity to socialize with other canines."
I read the web site. Once they except you as a client ..they go to the pound & test dogs. Then the dogs sre put into Foster Care where the are House trained & Basic Obiedanced trained. Spayed up to date on shots. In the meantime you are trained & evaluated as to being able to care for the dog [with a care taker helping you]
Then the dog comes into your home where they work with you & the dog to basicly go get your caretaker should you get out of bed or up. After that You recieve a paper saying this is a highly trained Service Dog. [BUT No where did I find that the dog was trained in public wjth manners to eat in Restuants or shopping!]
After all this & you paying them a hefty sum...YOU have to take the dog thru Basic & for a network of friends for the dog & you. I think You best reread the web site.....

What does the ADA have to do with service animals? Everything!! I haven't read this entire thread, clicked on it while tooling around too close to bedtime, but what I did read was extremely upsetting. I have a medically prescribed service animal. Read the ADA. There is alot of misinformation in this thread. Who does anyone think they are to talk about "bad apples" or try to determine the legitimacy of another persons service animal? You want to see my prescription? Better put your request in writing and summon law enforcement to witness it. Ditto if you want to know what disability my animal is prescribed for. Read the ADA. Misinformation is very dangerous when it interferes with people getting, keeping, and employing the service animal they need.

What are you talking about? Some people are saying that some peeople are abusing the system and before long people will say that they have anger issues and need a dog and it will be endless. Goodness, no one is asking for papers proving disability, I don't like people questioning me and I don't care to do that about others, this is about people who don't need the animals that want one and don't have legitamacy. Service and therapy dogs are different things and my case is a service dog I am trying to get and that is the topic I am trying to discuss by the way.

An added note, the degree of misinformation and ignorance of service animal issues is such that I do everything possible to not use my service animal as such, because having to argue with people who don't even know the laws they are operating under at their own financial risk aggravates my condition. People should educate themselves and then mind their own business.
