Up is easier, and I can do it by myself, we just have his front paws up, and I come in and just lift the back end.
I don't think Dante likes to swim, but where the ball goes, so doth the dog.
Steve sinks. Like a rock.

Ah, man, you make me laugh!
Speaking of "where the ball goeth", you know I have both mine working chasing geese, right? Herding breed, so they love working animals more than anything, even food. I've had them going on 3 years now. Their first summer with me, and I took them swimming. Terrified, absolutely terrified. But with a great deal of positive persuasion, they survived.
Well, now, you know the first thing geese do when you chase them off is head for water. They usually don't come around unless there is a pond or lake near enough they can retreat to it. AND, that is the first place they go. They don't leave - they take to the water. I've had to resort to taking a canoe to the water, and a radio-controlled boat (a fancy toy, really, but it puts pressure on the geese!). If you have a dog who will take to the water, it makes life much easier.
TBH, I didn't expect much from mine when it came to taking to the water. As I said, they are NOT comfortable in that zone. The male tried once, early on after having learned to swim. He's never ventured to do it again. The female, Amy, is more cautious, but will go farther in the long run. She started taking to the water when needed this past spring. It takes her 3 or 4 false starts, but it gets a little easier each time she does it. In microscopic steps, but still, she improves. She doesn't want to go swimming, but she REALLY wants to get those geese to move, and she is willing to do what is needed to make that happen!
It's marvelous working with them!
