Amy and Andy are littermates - siblings - and near enough alike that you could call them twins. A matched pair, if you will. They came to me through the rescue orgs with the names Amy and Andy, and that was just too perfect. I had to keep it that way. Wordplay on Amos and Andy and Raggedy Ann and Andy - famous duos.
A rescue dog, now gone, was nicked by the rescue org as "Kringles" - because he was white. Well, Nordic blond, anyway! That didn't quite seem to fit, so we picked "Klinger", for the nose!
As for our dog, Jake the german shepherd was originally called "Hercules" by his previous owner. I thought that was too long but didn't want to change the sound too much. Jake sounds a bit like Herc.
16 years ago we went to get a dog at the pound. So many of the dogs were barking and pushing up against their cages. Except for one dog that was standing there quietly with floppy ears and his tongue hanging out. We decided on him, he is a Lab/Husky mix. His name was Happy and hos owners had surrendered him because they had too many dogs and he was the last one they adopted, so he went back first. He will be 18 this February and has been a stellar dog. We kept his name because he is so Happy!
We obtained Allie about 7 years ago. She is a Chihuahua. My daughter is little. She will be 16 in October and is 5'1 and weighs 88 pounds. You can imagine how small she was at 9 years of age! She wanted a little dog she could manage and wanted a girl she could dress up and get her nails painted. We checked out Craig's List and found Allie. She named her after her favorite character on a show called Alex and Allie.
Lastly, in May we adopted a dog from the pound. She is a female Labrador/Beagle mix that had just been spayed. Her 2 puppies had just been adopted. We did a little dog and cat test on her to make sure she would get along well with them.she She does and she is just beautiful and sweet! I have always wanted a female dog and to name her Daisy.
Our current dog was a rescue that was named by her rescuer so we kept the name when we got her. It’s a human name and it’s the first time I’ve had a pet with a human name — I’ve never been a fan of that. However it seems to be “the thing” now as literally every dog on our street has a human name.
Ziti who passed was a bichon bolognese. We named her Ziti due to her heritage as a long cherished breed in Italy.
Our smallest and youngest dog is another type of bichon. She is a Bolonka from Russia. She weighs 5 lbs and is pure black and a great dog. She is called Sasha for obvious reasons.
The third dog is another bichon as Ziti and Sasha both. BB is named for being a hybrid of Bolognese and Bolonka Bichon breeds. She is 10 lbs like Ziti was.
All three are fabious breeds and very loving intelligent dogs we cherish
When we applied for our dog, we saw his picture and decided his name was going to be either Cooper or Shea. Cooper made us think of a bouncy, energetic, goofball; Shea was our name for a low-key, relaxed lap-dog.
When we met him, he licked my 6 year in the face, hopped into my 8 year-old’s lap, and tried to run in circles around my husband and I. My husband laughed and looked at me and said, “He’s definitely a Cooper.”
How did your dog(s) get their name(s)?
Our latest addition is a distinguished and "literary" little guy. Half Jack Russel and half Chihuahua. Although he looks more JR. He's much larger than a chi, and larger than any Jacks I have seen.
He was part of an "oops" litter that was dropped at a local shelter.
His markings made him look "well dressed" and he seems dignified and dapper - a Dandy, of sorts.
We named him "Truman", after Truman Capote. My husband and I are both fans of his work.
I like puns so named our lab a double pun: Pi, short for Pilot. (We got her before the movie Life of Pi came out.)
The double pun is this: When asked, I would tell people that Pi got her name for being irrational. This is a math joke for those of you scratching your heads (the number pi, is an irrational number). I would also say that Pilot is my co-dog, which is a play on the bumper sticker "God is my co-pilot".
Pi was a great dog, but alas, she is now pushing up daisies in our garden.
Not my dog but the last post made me want to post about a friends dog. He passed away some time ago. His name was Toaster and he was a schnauzer poodle mix. They had a Toaster Shnoodle!
