I meant to write this months ago!

Cody has a up to date license tag but on top of that we had a tag made at walmart that says his name and my cell phone number. I think its a great idea.
My mom had tags made for all the dogs in the family(her kids dogs included)

I trust the pound but isn't it awesome that my direct phone number is on there.
I'll never change my cell number!!!!

I have embedded tag on their collars. I found them more convenient.

Tatooing ...just like a person getting a tatoo but on a dog usually done on the rear inside leg. When I raised dogs I had all mine tatooed with their AKC# Lots of people used their SS# then reg it with National Dog Registery...

For those that use ID tags, it's also good to put a back up number on there with someone else that knows your pet; your vet, neighbor a good friend.

I got my dog microchipped the same time she was spayed. We haven't lost her yet (thank goodness) but I feel good knowing that she has some extra protection. I keep hearing things about dog thefts on the rise. It's also scary how fast some pounds will start adopting out the animals they find!

our collie wondered once and the pound took her.
My mom was searching frantically everywhere.
She found her at the pound w/ her tags taken off and up for adoption!!!
I trust a stranger to call me before the pound would. People have big hearts when it comes to lost dogs. I would tie the dog up in the front yard and make a poster w/ my number on it if I found a dog I thought might be local. ...give it a few hours and then call the pound.

Tattoos can be altered easily.

Ours are microchipped. Truth is, if someone tries to find the right owner, the tattoo or the microchip will work. If they don't WANT to return the dog to the owner (say, sell it to a lab instead), then the tattoo can be altered which will lead to a dead end. For that matter, I don't know of a lab will check for a microchip, or make attempts to return the dog to its owner. They'd be out the money.

Bottom line is, protect your pooches to the best of your ability. Don't leave them out in the yard (fenced or otherwise) when you are not there to watch them. Don't let them wander the neighborhood. Keep them close at all times. People don't just find dogs, they also are looking to steal dogs. A wandering dog is easy to steal.
