I am having someone stay at my house with my two dogs. I have no idea what daily rate to pay her. For those of you who have someone pet sit at your house, could you tell me approximately what you pay for this service? Thanks!
Depending on where you live...I would Google Pet Sitters for your area and see what the going rate is. I know in our area to have a pet sitter come and check on your animals it depends on how many animals, how often you want them to come, etc. Since someone is staying at your house you can come up with an average. The pet sitters in our area charge anywhere from $25-50 per day depending on the level of services. These pet sitters don't stay at your house...they just come and check on your pets.
I know we pay $50 a night where we board...but that's b/c we chose the best accomodations and get the bigger suite for our two dogs. But we would rather have someone stay at the house any time...just finding someone you completely trust is tough. So you have the easy part left...what to pay.
Yes, Amazonchix is right on when she says it depends where you are located. Is this a friend or neighbor? Or someone who does it professionally--which seems odd or she'd likely have a rate that she charges. I pay someone $15 a day to come "play" with the dogs for a half-hour. When I traveled, she stayed as a huge favor--not something she wants to do--so I figured out how much it would be for $20, rounded up, and offered the enticement of fabulous gifts from Mexico (plus, I have a really nice media room which helps too ) Keep in mind that it's a huge responsibility and as A-chix points out, trust is essential. So don't balk over pricing--it will cost less than boarding plus you get so many perks of having someone there to bring in mail, keep your pups in their enviroment, etc.. Enjoy your trip!
My daughter, a junior in high school, is pet sitting for one of my neighbours. They pay her $20 per day for feeding the dog twice a day. They did not ask her to walk the dog, but she does it anyway. She loves their black lab.
Since the person obviously is doing this as favor rather than a business, I would probably pay them what it would cost me for 1 dog at a kennel/vet.. I would think $20-25 a day would be reasonable.
Thank you for your opinions. I was thinking of paying around $50 a day as that is what I would pay at a kennel. I just wanted to make sure that it was a fair amount. I am so excited to have someone that I trust to stay here.
I'm in Massachusetts and the going rate here is $15-$18 per visit for a sitter that comes to your house but doesn't spend the night. Overnight care is around $55 per night, plus $15 for the midday walk.
I just paid $40.00/day for somebody to come to my house 4 X's per day and let the dogs out, as well as feed them. The kennel would have been $55.00, and I know my dogs are much happier being home.

That sounds like a very fair amount and the person will probably feel good about it, which in turn will encourage them to play for long periods with your dog, etc.
If it works for your budget, I think that's a nice, fair amount.
