Doggy doors for large breeds
Does anyone have experience with doggy doors for large breeds, i.e., Rottweilers? I'm just not finding any that melt my butter - and most appear to be way too small for my heathens to go in and out. I'm really, really tired of being the doorman.
I've seen the magnetized ones where the dog wears a collar that causes the door to open and shut, but I have one rescue who is afraid of doors (?) and I think that would freak her out...not even sure I'll be able to get her to use a doggy door. Since we live in a circa 1872 house, the ventilation is sufficient <grin> and I don't need anything else leaking like a sieve. The ones with the rubber flaps just look kind of flimsy. This is a standard door so the opening would have to be pretty big...anyone got a brand name to throw at me? The storm doors with the built in doggy entrances are nice if you've got a gob of money sitting around but I really didn't want to take out a second mortgage for my convenience, so those of you with really big dogs and a dog door...I need your help!

My friend got a doggie door for a golden retriever he wants to get (he also had an Akita and used this door). He has had no problems with the flap, doesn't leak and has a hard plastic door to close off as well... he is using the window version as he has french doors. Anyway this is the site he went to get it.. Moorepet Pet Doors dog door cat door, doggie door experts 1-800-829-7876. Hope that helps. It took awhile to get. (He pet sits my dog often and I don't have a doggie door.. my dog loves it).

We had a mix, Malumute/Siberian, in Colorado and bought a "doggy door" because I got tired of opening the patio sliding door for her. We installed the door, gave Nikki a few lessons on going in and out of it and EVERYTHING was great from there! We even knew when she went in or out because the flap made some noise that we got use to at night while sleeping. We liked this "door" so much, that we brought it with us when we moved out of Colorado to use with our next dog.

I think they are called "human" doors.

I do leave the door open when the weather permits since I work from home and can see the 3/4 acre back yard from my office - but in Arkansas it gets to be 110 degrees in the summer with 90% humidity - no thank you...
Thanks for the name, janecj - I'm thinking about putting French doors in the bedroom, that may work perfectly!

Sam, thats hysterical that you call them heathens. I do the same thing, the animals or at times my daughter and her friends.
I have sliding doors and have wanted a pet door that fits into the track but I don't have the money at the moment so I made one out of wood. It sits in the track and is hidden by the curtains so you can't see how ghetto it is. The pets LOVE it and I don't end up loosing the AC out the open sliding door.

The only ones I have found to accommodate our Akita are the ones you install with sliding doors. Since we don't have a sliding door on our house, we just take her in and out. Argh! I'd be interested in other options as well.

The Invisible Fence Company has a large breed doggy door that should work for your dogs.
