Is it for the entire first year? Up to 6 months? Is there a designated age you are suppose to switch from puppy to adult? Thanks!

It all depends on the food you choose and the protein and fat content.

What kind of dog do you have? I know I pulled my GSD puppy off of puppy food at 6mnths because the protein content was too high. It helped to slow his growth down. On the other hand I had a golden and he stayed on puppy chow until just about a year. I also have a friend with an Italian Mastiff and at 18mnths he is still on puppy chow!!!

Katie stopped eating puppy food at 4 months...she ate my food instead. But thats also about the time all the dog foods were toxic!! When she did go back on dog food [sometimes!] She eats Lassie!

We are getting a Native American Indian Dog/puppy. Excuse my ignorance but what is a GSD puppy? The puppy we are getting is already 14 lbs at 6 1/2 weeks. She is large and will be around 90 lbs when fully grown. Her mom is around 85 lbs and her dad is around 100-115. Thanks

The higher those contents I assume the earlier she will need to switch?

GSD is short for German Shepherd Dog Don't worry I wasn't down with the lingo until a few months after I picked him up! I have never heard of the breed, what I would look for is heath issues they may be prone to. Many large breed dogs have hip issues which is why if they grow too fast it can aid in the severity and onset of hip problems. He sounds like he'll grow to be as big as mine! I just looked at a picture of your breed, they look like a wolves and huskies, very beautiful! A friend of mine has a GSD/wolf hybrid and looks very similar to the pictures of American Indian Dogs, very interesting breed. How did you hear about them? Also I feed my dog Premium Edge, I would recommend staying away from red meat, lots of protein and hard to digest. If you look on the ingredients it will tell you the protein content, I think the % should be around 20 for puppies and up to 27% for adults. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong! Here is a link for reviews of premium dog foods. Food is complicated, if you have more questions feel free to ask, it took me nearly 6mnths to finally settle on a food!!!
