For those of you who have a dog that won't go in a dog house, you might want to try building a house with two doors. Some dogs have a real fear of being trapped somewhere, just like many people do. A dog house with a door on the front and back may be more appealing than one with one small entrance. It won't be as warm and cozy, but the dog might use it to stay out of the sun/rain.

Not all dogs are pets....some are hard wired to do their jobs......that does not mean we do not love them.

Would it be fair to the dog to keep them in a house where they feel hot and then take them out in the cold for hours????

The OP said at one time the dog stayed inside, but because he is so big and dumb, he breaks things.... by the way the OP was talking, it sounds like they should have never got the dog. I HIGHLY doubt this person has any reason to have a "working" dog. Should have got a cat.

Sounds likely. I like the idea of a lean-to attached to the front of the house. Your dog will have protection from the elements but not feel trapped.

Coonhounds are skittish by nature.

They are hunters........we ask ours to stand up against bears.....they need the ability to jump back.

I tried this spring to make a puppy into a pet.......she did OK......until she saw the other hounds tied out in the yard.

She wanted to be with the pack........she treed her first bear at the age of 7 months.....blood will always override environment.

This is why I do not like mixed breed dogs......there can be a real conflict.

The dog is dumb?

You are the one who hasn't taught him house manners and instead dumped him outside to use "a nice doghouse."

I didn't think you meant dumb in that manner,,, cause dogs are smarter than some humans I have found at any rate my dog is in a big kennel made to house to large dogs tarped up and all the way around hay inside dog house my old king size blankets automatic water feeder and dog food feeder today it was raining and all day he has been on top of his dog house so I'm like hmmmmm,,,, when I let him out to run around I checked his kennel come to find out the rain flooded my back yard so inside his kennel was soak and wet,,, try cleaning his dog house out,, he or she may not like the scent,, may be a bug or spider in there trust me if he is willing to stay in the rain something is wrong with the dog house and who's to say the old owner didn't have him locked up in one of them,,, get a kennel from home depo some hay tarp it all around when it gets cold put old blanket in front of the door area put him in there and there you go he can move around plus be out the rain,,,,
