Foods Dogs Can't Have (lab, diet, fleas, reactions)

After reading jBirds chocolate post (and noticed the mention of grapes being bad for dogs) I thought about all the other foods that are probably no, no's. What ARE the foods dogs are NOT allowed to have?

Onions and garlic, although garlic requires large amounts.

My dogs eat raw eggs weekly for the lat 5 years....
They also eat yugurt and cottage cheese, potatoes (sweet) and garlic. Raw bones and raw meat, these are part of the raw diet.

Some foods i agree with such as certain nuts, grapes, raisins, chocolate and onions.

And who in their right mind would give their dog alcohol or tobacco??

I thought raw sweet potatoes were good for dogs. I give my dog grapes (only a few at a time) as a treat.

As you say, doesn't a raw food diet include a lot of these things?

Giving your dog alcohol or tobacco? Or, even as I learned is sometimes done in certain famous sled dog races, blow marijuana in the dogs' snouts to calm them down. That, my friend, is some kind of serious perversion, as the animal has no say in the matter.

So, I sure don't feel bad giving my dog a few grapes now and then. But he'll only eat green seedless grapes, doesn't like the red ones! What's a mom to do!?

Be careful with grapes, since not all dogs have toxic reactions to them. We also used to use grapes as treats, before we found out they can be harmful. The reaction can occur at any time, even if you've given grapes in the past. So, best not to give them at all.
Blueberries, on the other hand, are good for them, and so are apples and carrots.

It's a good list that was posted - I'd only add: No nuts.

I think I knew about all these (except garlic).. I'll pass the garlic one around because a LOT of people I know here in Texas think that adding garlic to your pet's food will help repel fleas!

I used to give my Lab grapes too, she loved them, but read about that last year and have stopped.

What's with the nuts though? What's the danger? My dogs will occasionally get a peanut here and there (shelled of course)... and when it's pecan season they are constantly eating them when they're outside if I don't take them away. They'll crack them open and dig out the meat or if we're shelling/eating pecans they will wait eagerly for a bite.
