Default Flea Prevention

For 3 months now I have been using a hartz 4 in 1 flea product. It was on sale for $5 for 3 months worth. I never had a dog before so im not sure exactly how it works but my dog always has fleas crawling on him. A few dont move at all so im not sure if they are the dead ones. Does a more expensive flea product have the same symptons. I was under the effect that it keeps fleas off the dog, or does it just kill them when they suck the blood and having crawling fleas on the dog is normal. I do use the right amount for the dogs weight. When I first brought the dog home from the shelter it was flea free for at least 2 weeks.

You may want to do a search regarding Hartz flea products. There are some known issues with this product and severe reactions resulting in vet bills.

You might want to call your vet and ask them.

Please, please, please do not use an OTC flea preventative. Many pets have died from neurological problems caused by these products.

Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution (which includes heartworm preventative) are going to be much, much safer for your pet and be a lot more effective. You can not be a penny pincher when it comes to products like this. Yes, they are expensive. They are also safe and effective. I save $$$ by ordering online from PetsuppliesNet.Com

We don't ever recommend the OTC stuff. Our number one recommendation for dogs is frontline, but we also carry revolution, advantage/advantage multi and advantix. These products are more expensive, but I think they are worth it.

Move to Alaska, we have no fleas, tics, or heart worms. It is a paradise for dogs!

I've had good luck with Advantage, been using it for years. It's made by Bayer and they tend to have really good formulations, their stuff works .

Bayer Advantage:: Flea Control for Dogs and Cats

Frontline did not do the trick for us, just wasn't strong enough I guess.

My dog would love it there. He's a northern breed and loves snow. I almost moved to Alaska a few years ago, but then I got Lupus and being that cold weather isn't good for the joints, I had to can that idea. But I absolutely love your state! It was sooooo beautiful and peaceful there when I visited. It would be paradise for my dog, that's for sure!

Regarding fleas, I use Frontline on my dog. There have been too many deaths from OTC flea products. I wouldn't use any of them.

I had a German Huskie for 17 years, never had fleas.

Gave Max (female) Brewers Yeast, it's an over the counter vitamin.

Why are they on the market? It is so expensive to pay for Advantage ($70 per pkt from the vet, $60 online). I just bought a flea product called Adams Spot On ($11 for 3 applications at Wal Mart) and am reluctant to try it after reading this thread. On their website they say, "Formula from the brand sold by veterinarians for over 30 years." Just wondering.

Why is terrible dog food on the market, why are there puppymills, why are Greenies still on the market, etc. Because it's all about the $$. I would not use a Flea Preventative or H/W Preventative that is not a prescribition. Check out Discount Pet Drugs I get my H/W Prevention from this place. They are the cheapest I have found. And you get an RX from your vet and save some money and it's the same thing. You have be careful with places that don't require RX. Many times, it's not the real thing or it's expired.
