My mother owned a poodle that lived to be 17.5 yo. She definitely did not give her quality food, grocery store stuff most likely. She can't believe the money I spend on good dog food!
My Sibe turned 8 yesterday. He weighs 75 pounds, so according to the charts, he's the equivalent of about 64 human years. His sister, who is from the same litter, is also 8 -- obviously! -- but she weighs about 40 pounds, so is "younger" than my guy. Anyway.... I'm hoping I'll have another 5+ years with him. Our other dogs have lived to about 13. My brother's oldest Sibe will be 16 in March and is still doing pretty well, all things considered.
I had one dog for 15 1/2 years, she was a very mixed breed, no idea what she was. But I almost lost her several times due to medical issues during the years, like when she ate the feet out of my pantyhose and they got stuck in her intestines. Emergency surgery ($$$$$$) fixed that. I also had a golden lab mix who lived until 11 years old when she was taken by spinal cord cancer on September 11, 2001 - talk about a bad day, but it helped me put her loss into perspective.
My purebred malamute growing up lived to near 14, fairly old for a large dog. Rest assured that she never spent so much as a day indoors, never ate anything but table scraps and house brand/generic food. She also survived being hit by a car (the only injury she sustained was a bite to her tongue), and surgery for a large, though benign, fatty tumor. Tough old broad she was.
Hanna, what do you feed your dogs to allow them to live so long? Or do you attribute it to another reason?
This thread is old! Sadly, the lab mix I posted about back then passed away last June at 17 years old.
They had been fed mostly junk foods (Science Diet, Beneful, Pedigree), dry and canned mixed, until their later years. Then, after doing research, I decided to feed better foods. They still got dry and canned mixed, but better quality foods. The lab x was fed Merrick canned and dry his last few years.
While I do believe that better food may make a difference, I don't know. Thy lived most of their lives on grocery store dog foods.
