First of all, what exactly does it cover? I can tell you for sure it will not cover any predisposed/genetic conditions, such as HD, Blindness, and other stuff, depending on the breed.

Vaccinations: of course it will cover vaccionations and vet visits. I only vaccinate my dogs once in 3 years for rabbies, any other vaccines are worthless and cause more bad then good.

Will it cover flea/tick control treatments?

Will it cover blood work, allergy tests, etc??
Just few things to consider.

For me, it will be cheaper to pay ones a year for a vet visit and full blood work, then to pay every month.

My female had a surgery because she bloated, do you think pet insurance would cover that? I can bet your butt it will fall under genetics/predisposed condition.

So, if someone can provide me with any potential benefits/savings by having pet insurance, i'd be glad look into it.
You've made me feel better about turning the insurance down.

After I had sent in the paperwork to AKC for Ben's papers I got an offer in the mail from them for insurance. I threw it away because I figured it was a waste of money. Two weeks later the vet hears a heart murmer and after a ultrasound we find out he has a hole in his hear.

Go figure. Anyway I "beat" myself up for not getting that insurance.

I do not have the kind of insurance that pays for routine things like well-visits or vaccinations. My insurance is strictly accident/illness. So, if my dog got hit by a car, or ate something that caused an obstruction, or got cancer, etc, it would be covered. It is so that if something major happens to my dog that is going to cost $1000's I won't need to think about if I can afford it or whatever. I have a deductible of $100 per year and after that insurance pays 80%.

I opted not to get insurance for my dog fourteen years ago. He had a very healthy life until he was twelve and then his troubles began. I often questioned my original decision to decline insurance. However, I have read so many posts and heard that as dogs become seniors most insurance companies cancel policies and also of questionable coverage.
I would personally like to see a catastrophic insurance policy with a high deductible and low premiums with well defined coverage.

I would definitely recommend getting insurance for a puppy. We got VPI and it cost about 300 bucks for the first year for our golden. With the shots and the neutering, we must have gotten at least 200 bucks back from them. My brother bought a boxer from a pet store(impulsive, what can I say) and they didn't get insurance. They had nothing but problems with her ranging from kennel cough to doggie menengitis to cancer. She passed away in June at the age of 3 and I am sure they spent 10k+ on her healthcare.

With our golden, we dropped the coverage after a year because he was healthy and had no issues. Will I regret that decision down the line? Maybe. But like other people said, it is easy for them to deny claims.

I had ASPCA dog insurance, $16/mo if the dog is under 10. Mine was older. She was healthy and suddenly had abdominal cancer and alot of bills and treatments. They took $100 deductible and paid 80% of what they c onsidered reasonable. It really helped me for the cancer treatments and vet bills and ultrasounds.

My policy (Pet First) says they will not cancel your pet's policy as long as they are covered before their 10th birthday. This was important to me because our 6 year old Bichon has already had a bunch of health problems.

PetFirst's pet insurance is available to all dogs and cats older than 8 weeks and younger than 10 years no matter what breed. As long as your pet has coverage before their tenth birthday, their PetFirst pet insurance policy is renewable for life.

I've had VPI for my MinPin since she was a puppy, and she's 8 now. I like it because this dog has had so many health issues! Just recently, allergies that caused her to gnaw on her paws until they were infected. So a $135 vet visit, and I got back over $80 (I have a $50 deductable). She rarely goes over 6 months without a vet visit. I love her too much to end up having to put her down just because I can't afford the surgery or whatever.
